"We had an attached screened-in porch that was sinking.Acculevel came in and detailed every aspect of the repair project and then followed thru to the most minuet detail. Excellent work and very detail oriented. Friendly and cooperative service team that completed the work. This seemed like what was going to be a complicated job, using augered jacks, concrete removal, and replacing trex floor. ...In a nutshell, they made what seemed hard..very manageableand 100% solved.Excellent service, excellant price......Terry M."

"Here’s a polished version you can use for a review or post: Frankie’s Landscaping did an outstanding job rebuilding my retaining wall. Their crew showed up ready to work and immediately got started removing the old wall and carefully leveling the area before the rebuild. The attention to detail and professionalism really stood out throughout the entire process. The finished wall looks fantastic and was done right the first time. Top-notch work—I highly recommend Frankie’s Landscaping!"

"Veneer Building Stone was applied to our home foundation and surrounding front and back porches. Porch surfaces were overlaid with cement and a pattern was applied. A portion of the driveway apron was removed and new was installed to replace the damaged section, and the front sidewalk was resurfaced. All work was done to our satisfaction. The workmen were craftsmen, reliable, and trustworthy. This project improved the appearance of our home and is value added. We recommend Madison County Custom Concrete to those wanting quality masonry work."

"We couldnâ t find anyone local to install a chimney, so went with Shamrock, who had a crew working locally, although they were based 2 hrs away. They came sooner than expected, did the job beautifully, and have been easy to contact with any questions we had. Very pleased with the whole project."

"Joel is a great sales rep and facilitator. He went beyond the call of duty to find us someone who would remove our tiles (which contained some asbestos), He also never tried to pressure us to do a bigger project than we were comfortable with, and he was always very clear about everything. Kelly at the desk was always very helpful and conscientious. The installation team men were good to work with. People were unfailingly friendly and communicated well. Very professional overall, and a job well done. Clean-up could have been a little better, but it was a long day and the men faced a long drive home from Urbana. The company was also very efficient in scheduling us and getting the work done."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

When painting brick, each application method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Spraying is significantly faster but may not penetrate deeply beyond the surface layer. Rolling is effective for working paint into the brick's texture but can be less effective on mortar joints. If you opt for a roller, choose a thick nap of at least a half-inch to ensure paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage. Using a brush is generally not recommended as it is very time-consuming and provides poor surface penetration. Ultimately, a combination of spraying followed by back-rolling is often the best strategy for a durable and even finish.

Yes, brick houses are better insulated, because the bricks slow down the passage of air from the outside to the inside and vice-versa. This helps to stabilize the internal temperature of the home. When combined with proper residential insulation, brick houses are more efficient and better insulated than other types.

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.

You should generally drill into the mortar joints when installing shutters on brick. Mortar is softer, which makes drilling easier and puts less strain on your tools. It also lowers the risk of cracking a brick—something that’s a lot harder to fix. Mortar holds fasteners well enough for standard shutters, and if you ever need to patch the holes later, it’s a much simpler job than dealing with damaged brick. Just keep in mind that if your mortar joints are too thin or the hardware calls for brick anchoring, you'll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust accordingly.

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.
