We have 3 employees we don't all usually work, we do mostly tree topping but we remove tree and stumps also, we can do jobs as big as clearing out tree lines to just removing a tree dead or to close to the house. We use climbers mostly so we don't destroy yards with bucket trucks and spilling hydrolic oil everywhere.

Leaf Removal questions, answered by experts

Using a drill to bore holes in the stump's center speeds up the process, whatever method you use. If you don’t have a drill, you can still chainsaw or chisel the stump to make it hollow; it will just take more elbow grease and time. Steer clear of burning the stump to hollow it if you can’t drill some holes in it first. Otherwise, getting it to light, stay lit, and burn right through will be a challenge.

The best tool to remove stumps is a stump grinder. You can rent one from a home improvement store or hardware store. You must wear protective gear when working with a stump grinder. It can take up to six hours to grind a stump, or you can hire a pro to tackle the job.

A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. In addition, they can drop large branches on your house, make it easier for critters and insects to access your home, and encourage mold growth. But if the tree has been there for a long time, it may not pose a risk to your foundation, and it could be more beneficial—not to mention cheaper—to strategically trim it instead. Your best bet is to consult an arborist for advice.

The felling notch you make before you make the final cut will determine which way the tree will fall. The cut will be in a wedge or triangle, and the tree will fall from the highest point of the triangle. You can use this, as well as the process described above, to estimate where a tree will fall.

If you’re hiring a company to perform stump grinding—or any home service for that matter—you’ll want them to at least have general liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. This type of coverage protects both you and the business in the case of any accidents. Professional liability insurance and inland marine insurance plans are also important for tree companies to have. Ask any pro you’re considering hiring about licenses and insurance coverage before booking the job.
