"They did a fabulous job installing my neighbor's deck in a quick and professional manner. They also offered to repair a minor issue of my deck (done by someone else previously) as a courtesy. They came and did it as promised. They are a very reliable company."

"Excellent job repairing our deck! The job was to power wash, replace boards as needed, and paint. The power wash and replacement of boards was well done. Two coats of paint were applied well. Our unhappiness stems from the finished project's paint not looking at all like the paint chip. We get that the actual paint job won't be a perfect match to the chip, but this was way off and way too light. We noticed as they were going into the second coat and said that it didn't look right. Even after it dried, the color was very much too light. I wish they'd had enough knowledge (?) to advise us of this before they got the paint. They kind of shrugged off our complaint because "this is the shade you ordered." We paid in full for the work they did. Then went to Menard's and found a darker shade of the same paint line that we applied ourselves. The deck looks great now."

"Had a kitchen drawer repair, and this last time, a front door handle repaired. I particularly like the ease of making an appointment and working around your schedule. Also, the competence of both workers was a relief: did not have to re-do the repair, and they went out of their way to do what they could without requiring new purchases. Strong recommendation."

Small jobs welcome

"There was a recent all day high wind storm in our area. It partially ripped off a piece of our outside metal trim. We have a small Cape Cod with a high roof. The metal strip of trim kept swinging close to our upstairs new bedroom window .It was making a loud continual scrapping noise. against the house. My husband said he would repair the damage the next day , after the wind storm was over. . He is in his late 60â s and I became worried that he might fall off the high ladder in the process. Friends had told me about sad stories of people that had fallen off high ladders, and broken both hips, legs, arms, and worse , lost their lives. I was becoming anxious . I began searching for a handy man to repair it. I took a photo of the damage too. Most of the handy men that I called told me they did not go up on high ladders. Others said that I would have to wait until next week to get it repaired . The cost of the repair was being estimated between $300.00 -$400.00 . My husband refused to pay that amount and insisted on repairing it himself. The evening was approaching , the wind had not died down yet., and my anxiety level was increasing . I remembered that a friend told me that you can call Home Depot , and ask for names of local handy men that they work with in my area. Home Depot kindly connected me with home advisor, which kindly gave me 3 phone numbers of highly recommended Handy Men . near me. . I happen to call David Anderson name first. It was almost 9pm and actually too late to call anyone, but I was in panic mode , so I tried anyway, expecting to just leave a voicemail . David answered the phone call. He had a calm and kind voice . I sent him a photo of the damage and asked him if he would repair it . He said he would repair it tomorrow and that it wouldnâ t cost several hundred dollars. I was so thankful! David arrived the next afternoon , and repaired it for only $90.00 , but my husband gave him a $100.00. David repaired the trim and bent it back into place . It was hardly noticeable that it was bent! Thank you David! ! My husband and I are very impressed with him! . We highly recommend his work! He is courteous , hard working , and competent Handy Man ! It is hard to find someone like that these days.. We will definitely be using his services in the future !!!"

"My experience with Moe was incredible. He was such a welcoming and kind person from the moment I talked to him. He made sure he understood exactly what I wanted before getting started on anything and I could tell he was really paying attention and wanting to give me what I asked for. His work was incredible and amazing. I needed my deck repaired and fixed before my family came from out of town and he was able to make that happen efficiently and perfectly. I couldn't have asked for anyone better as a worker and as a person. He really did amazing and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again in the future!!!!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.

Staining and sealing the underside of a deck creates a moisture barrier but traps water in the boards, quickly leading to rot. No matter how well you seal the above deck, water still gets through via nails and screw heads on the surface. Allow this water to flow naturally under the deck, where it is routed through the drainage system.

To flatten a cupped deck board, start by ensuring it’s dry. Then, try flipping the board over so the cupped side faces down and reattach it. If that’s not possible, you can use screws to pull it tighter to the joists or plane the edges slightly to reduce the cup. It’s best to replace severely cupped boards.

No, you don't need to stain Ipe decking, although you can if you want to change the color. You will, however, need to apply a UV coating if you don't want the natural color to fade. Speak to a deck staining specialist near you to discuss the best options if you want to stain your decking. And remember that you’ll need to seal your Ipe wood deck annually to protect it from scratches and Mother Nature.
