"I must say that we are highly pleased with the work completed by Valor Home Solutions. Ammaron spent most of one day with us working on a plan as to what we wanted as a finished product. At the end of our meeting, we knew what to expect in regard to cost in material, labor, and quality of work. This project involved remodeling a very old bathroom. The old tub was removed, a new modern walk-in shower was installed with all new plumbing, a new floor was installed and deteriorated wood replaced where needed, and a new vanity was installed. If you have to hold the toilet handle (also called the toilet lever) down to flush, you probably have a chain problem. A chain that cannot fully lift the flapper will close too early and not clear the toilet bowl. Try adjusting the chain length so there’s about ½ inch of slack.   

Toilet handles can get stuck for a couple of reasons, but it’s commonly an issue with the chain. Remove the lid and check the chain’s connection, running from the flapper to the handle arm. Sometimes the chain gets snagged on or against another part of the tank. 

The chain might not have the right tension. For example, a chain that’s too short can make the handle feel stuck. Check that there’s some slack in the chain. Old, worn-out flappers can get stuck, too. In this case, you’ll need to see which size toilet flapper you need.

If your toilet won’t stop running, you might have a bad fill valve. This may be the case if the valve has calcium or debris buildup, is cracked, or shows visible signs of wear and tear. A bad fill valve may also be the culprit if you’ve already checked the flapper and chain and adjusted the fill height to no avail.

If you experience the telltale sign of wax ring failure, which is leaking water, replacing the faulty ring takes one to three hours, depending on accessibility. This is an exacting and time-consuming job, as several components must be removed for the plumber to access the ring. Once replaced, however, wax rings require little to no maintenance and last 30 years or longer.

If you don’t replace a toilet flapper, your toilet tank will continue to empty and fill repeatedly, wasting water and running up your utility bills. Checking the flapper is a good first guess when dealing with a constantly running toilet. However, if these problems continue after replacing the flapper, you may need to hire a plumber to check and fix any bigger problems.
