You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

Most of the interior doors in your home are the same size. For example, most bedroom doors may be the same size. However, your closet doors might be the same size as each other but are a different size from the bedroom doors. You might also have bedroom closet doors that are a different size from hallway closet doors. It’s best to be safe and measure any door you want to replace.

You can’t gauge the lifetime of a fire door like you could, say, an engine. Fire doors should be checked at least once every six months to ensure there are no signs of degradation like leaks, holes, water damage, termite damage, or anything else that might compromise the functionality of the door’s fire resistance. Check your smoke detectors while you’re at it.

You should rekey your house every three years to minimize the chances of someone gaining access to your home. You can do it more than that, but it depends on the level of foot traffic and visitors you get. Businesses, for instance, routinely rekey their locks every six months to a year. If you experience a break-in or a house key has gone missing, rekey the locks immediately. The same goes if your lock becomes damaged.

If your specific sliding glass door model is out of stock or no longer being built, it may still be best to contact the original manufacturer or installer. They can suggest a comparable replacement that is similar in size, avoiding more expensive repairs to retrofit a new door to an older opening.
