Concrete countertops can last a lifetime with proper maintenance. That includes regular resealing, waxing, and repairing any chips or cracks. At a minimum, they should last 20 years before major issues occur or performance drastically declines. The longevity of concrete countertops is a major reason people add them to their kitchens. It also makes up for the high cost of installation and added maintenance.

Use a dehumidifier for indoor concrete and a wet vacuum for outdoor surfaces. Sprinkle absorbent materials like sawdust or cat litter to soak up the remaining moisture. If the concrete is outside, simply wait for a few hot, dry days. If the concrete is inside, make sure you have good ventilation for a few days so that any remaining moisture can completely dry out.

Poured concrete should be set and hard to the touch within 24 to 48 hours, although it depends on the humidity in the air, the thickness of the concrete, and the type of concrete. It’s best to leave concrete to set for three days before exposing to foot traffic or stress. Concrete takes between 20 and 30 days to cure and reach its peak strength, so for foundations and retaining walls, plan to wait about a month before placing any load on your concrete.

Most of the time, you or your contractor will spray the concrete form and framework with a release agent or oil to prevent sticking. This is common practice with wood and steel forms. For insulated concrete forms, the styrofoam formwork often remains in place after construction, so you don’t need to treat it beforehand. Foam concrete forms made out of melamine also may not need treatment beforehand, as the material naturally won’t stick to the concrete after it’s cured.

It depends on the type of concrete and how long it takes to cure. Some concrete countertops can be sanded 3 days after pouring, while other slabs may require weeks to cure before sanding.
