More about David Bauerly: David Bauerly Antiques and woodworking have been a large part of David Bauerly's life. After a distinguished career as a craftsman and maker of high-end furniture in the Midwest, David Bauerly now brings his expertise to you in Working on Antiques with David Bauerly. High quality, handmade furniture has become very costly, and much of what is affordable in today's market is poorly made. More and more people are turning to antiques as an alternative. Working on Antiques is about how people can have high quality furniture in their homes and lives. David will show you how to find and refurbish fine furniture (antique and otherwise) for their homes without spending a fortune. During this process David will instill in people the joy of working with wood and appreciating the process of creating something they can take pride in. David is an expert in his field, and a master craftsman. In addition to restoring, refinishing, and rebuilding antiques, he has also built unique high-end pieces of furniture for customers from Texas to Minnesota to California. David Bauerly was born in 1952 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of an upholsterer, and David learned that craft at his father's knee. David opened his own shop in the early Seventies. He started with repairing and refinishing antiques, eventually moving into building furniture; after much hard work, he became well known throughout the Midwest for designing and building unique, world-class pieces. In 1985 David received his BA in Industrial Psychology from Morningside College, graduating summa cum laude. David worked with John Bradshaw after John's groundbreaking series On the Family appeared on Public Television. Working alongside John, David put on workshops throughout the U.S. In 1989 David was the executive producer of a ten-hour series on addictions called Contrary to Love, produced for Public Television. During this time, David maintained his shop and continued to produce high-end custom built furniture. Working in television production whetted David's appetite and ambitions, and during that time he began thinking about the show that became Working on Antiques. We know you'll enjoy Working on Antiques.

FAQs for furniture reupholstery projects in Sumner, IA

The cost to refinish wood furniture ranges widely, depending on the size and type of furniture. Here’s what you can expect to pay to refinish the following wood furniture items:

  • Table: $150–$700

  • Dining chair: $100–$400

  • Rocking chair: $200–$500

  • Bar stool: $100–$250

  • China cabinet or armoire: $500–$3,500

  • Dining set: $1,000–$3,000

  • Coffee table: $150–$800

  • Dresser: $300–$2,000

  • Bed: $350–$2,000

  • Pool table: $300–$600

  • Kitchen cabinets: $1,800–$5,000

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

It can be cheaper to reupholster a chair or other piece of furniture than to buy a new one, depending on how much it costs to replace. If the chair or couch originally cost less than $300, then reupholstery may not be the cheapest option. However, if the chair is expensive, vintage, or discontinued, reupholstery can be the more affordable option. This is especially true if the piece of furniture is out-of-production or holds sentimental value.

On average, the cost to reupholster furniture is about $720 per piece. However the price range to upholster a piece of furniture varies widely from about $380 to $1,150 or more, depending on the material type and availability, repairs needed, and the complexity of the project. Fabric costs typically range from $50 to $70 per yard while the cost of labor runs from $40 to $100 per hour.

The cost to refinish a table is about $250, depending on the size, type of finish, and amount of detail involved in the table and the new finish. The lowest price to refinish a table is about $80, and the highest is about $700. Additional tasks like dipping, stripping, staining, and painting will add to the total project cost. Here are average costs to refinish a table by type:

  • Side or end table: $80–$150

  • Coffee table: $150–$250

  • Dining room table: $400–$700
