"When I lived in Vermillion SD, John did all of my remodeling projects from 1994-2016. An in-ground concrete pool will carry the highest price tag of all available types of pools, with architectural or freeform concrete pools found at the top end of the price range. Although the upfront costs for a concrete pool are high, these pools tend to be more durable than pools made from other materials and will last the longest. 

Calcium hypochlorite, or cal-hypo, tends to be the best shock for an above ground pool. It is widely available, affordable, and powerful. Cal-hypo shock is typically 65% to 75% chlorine and is very effective at ridding a pool of bacteria or other contaminants.

A pool heater is worth the expense, given that it can extend your swimming season by several months, depending on where you live. For many, adding a pool heater allows the pool to remain in service from May through mid-October. Even temperatures in the 40s and 50s are tolerable when the water in the pool is heated.

Concrete pools have the longest life span. As long as you properly maintain your concrete pool, you can expect it to last 50 to 100 years. That said, you will need to resurface your concrete pool as it ages. Fiberglass is durable, but fiberglass pools generally only last around 25 to 30 years. That said, some high-end fiberglass pools can last more than 50 years if they’re well-maintained.

The only pools that don’t need grounding are those without electrical components, such as small inflatable pools. Any outlet around a pool should be a GFCI to cut the current if the outlet gets too wet.
