I do feel confident in judging good work from bad because In previous years, we had remodeling done to our home in Santa Ynez, California. I would never rehire this company to do so much as build me a dog house. We had a new $1.2 million dollar house built in Iowa when we moved there from California. The house was lovely, but it leaked . . . in the two story entry, the living room window, the two-story wall of windows in the family room, in the woodworking shop, in the artist studio and artist supply room, in the wine cellar, in the furnace room, in a bedroom closet . . . . We took nine years trying to get the company who built the house get the repairs right. Also, most of the doors in the house no longer shut or latch, the deck fell-apart within two years of construction, and problems with earth sinking away. A year and a half ago we gave up on the original contractor and hired a company highly recommended by Angies List. No more leaks or other problems. All has been repaired. So when I tell you that Jimmy Dollman's construction people are the best, I do have experience behind me. Though we were hundreds of miles away from the construction Jimmy was doing, constant communication, calls and emails, from Jimmy kept us current with the building so we could make decisions. Jimmy was also able to suggest some extra ideas and find ways of including them at a cost savings to us. The plans he prepared for the two projects were excellent, while accommodating our special needs. The day we arrived to use the bedroom constructed by Dollman, there was a worker there with the towel bars and handicap bars so I could decide just where I wanted them and all were quickly installed per my request. Jimmy knew we would be arriving to spend Christmas with my daughter and her family, so he pushed hard to get the bedroom/study and bathroom ready for our arrival!! The job was done to perfection . . . AND besides "taking orders" from me (because I paid for the construction), he had to work within my daughter and son-in-law's wishes (because the house and land belong to them). We are anxious to get our house in Iowa sold because we are looking forward to working with Jimmy Dollman Construction when we have a new home built for us on a lot we have purchased in Boones Mill, Virginia. Jimmy is very easy to work with and, without arguement, is willing to take on challenges and find ways to satisfy. He is a very positive person and with that attitude into the difficult projects, he enjoys finding ways to accomplish the wishes of his clients. He is right on the spot with all of the "governent", covenant, and legal necessities. Right now, Jimmy is keeping tabs on our progress toward moving and building in Boones Mill. He wants to be prepared when our Iowa home finally sells and we make the move to Virginia. If you are able to get Dollman Construction to accept you construction request, I know you will be very pleased with your project because Jimmy will make sure it is RIGHT!!!"},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/va/roanoke/dollman-construction%2C-inc-reviews-7677152.htm"},"position":5},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Dan Lynch Construction, Inc.","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"IA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"ARMELLA D."},"reviewBody":"Dan Lynch is very easy to talk and very responsive to requests. His workers were diligent, cleaned up after their work each day, and performed repairs that seemed to be impossible, but they were so meticulous that the repairs were perfect. We had two horrible repair areas at windows that had leaked for years. Time and time again we had people come in to find the leaks and fix them. None of them ever stopped the leaks, but Dan and his workers found the two leaks, which proved to be improper installation when we built the house. One leak was in a 14-foot span of windows, two stories high with 9 foot ceilings on both floors. The windows were surrounded and separated by very ornate wood trim that was painted white. Once the leak was "actually" repaired, the leak being the above the window where the wall met the soffit, the repairs began. 50% of all of the wood trim on that wall had cracks opened up in wet seams, creating highly visible destruction by the water. With the tiniest of tools, he very meticulously cleaned out all of the cracks, filled the spans of open breaks in the wood, painted the areas that were patched, That window also had serious and ugly water damage to the sills which were also repaired. When he finished this project, it was impossible to tell any water damage had ever taken place; it was like new!! The second very serious leak was in the large front window. This was another leak that numerous repair people told us they had patched . . . NOT!!!! Dan Lynches men found the leak, which was caused by a missing piece of the window on the floor above, which was how the builder of our home caused 9 years of leaking in the big window below!! Dan Lynch and his workers not only found the cause of the water damage, fixed the problem, and repaired the extensive water damage in the big window. Since the water had leaked in from the floor above, the wall paper had fallen way from the wall around the large window. The leak had created wood expansion and cracked paint on the window sill and on the mopboard at the floor below. The span of wallpaper between the the sill and floor had fallen away from the wall. At the top of the window was the worst damage that ran the entire length of the 10-foot window. In beginning his repairs the painter poked into the wallboard above the window to remove the damaged area. The wallboard came down and was so saturated that it had disintegrated into a soft, moldable clay!! He cleaned away the area above the window, installed a piece of new wallboard, about 9-feet by 5 inches, did all of the plaster and patch netting work and careful sanding. When that was pristine, he painted the area and when dry, he replaced the wallpaper. No one would ever know there had been a leak. The repairs that he did made were more art than a repair!!! There were numerous problems where simply painting over patched picture holes was not satisfactory because, although, I had all of the original paints, some had dried up. With my folders of house construction information, I had all of the paint numbers for the house. When he went to have fresh paint made for those dried up, he found that they had changed the base for all of the paints. The color was a perfect match to the walls, but looking at an angle, there was a different sheen to the original and new paint because of the base change to non-toxic. A few rooms he had to paint in entirety. He found that by a clever method of painting up to wall seams or deco wood, an area without a need for patching could be left unpainted by using corners, and other wall breaks as a method of making the paint job look perfect, without having to repaint the entire room. Over all of the years we worked with contractors for building additions or making repairs in 5 different homes, I never found anyone to compare to Dan Lynch and his crew!!! Besides the beautiful repairs, Dan was a very patient and responsive man. I would hire Dan Lynch again and highly recommend him to people needing help with their home. Worst decision ever. I've never dealt with such incompetence before. So this 6 month long experience starts out with me at Lowes in their door and window department where they present with me with several catalogs to look through. I select a custom 36 inch fiberglass 3/4 glass door with oak stained finish, 2 3/4 glass sidelites with decorative glass and a full transom window across the top of the door. The transom window had to be custom made since the vendor didn't carry a transom glass that matched the sidelite glass. I also select a 36 inch full view glass storm door. So far so good. The next thing they do is hire a contractor who they send out to my house to measure the entry before they order the door. I'm told that the door should be built and ready in about a month and then they will let me know when it's done at which point their contractor is suppose to contact me to schedule a day for the install. A month goes by and they indeed call me to let me know the door has arrived at their store and that their contractor will call me the next day to schedule an install. Now is where everything starts going bad. A week goes by and no call so I call Lowes and ask why their contractor has not called to schedule a time yet and they say they will make sure he does. A few more days go by and their contractor finally decides to call and says it will be a month before he can come to do the install. A month goes by and I schedule a day off from work to be present at the install as required by the contract that Lowes made me sign. The night before the install I get a phone call from a different contractor telling me that the other contractor decided he didn't have a big enough crew to do the job so he can't do the install. So this idiot waits the entire month to decide he can't do it. This new contractor says it will be a month before he can get out to do the install. Since I already schedule a day off from work I lost 1 vacation day so far. At this point I am obviously getting quite ticked off. I had to call Lowes to inform them of what was going on because they are obviously not managing their own contractors and they were clueless to what was going on. Another month goes by and the new contractor shows up right after Lowes drops off the door. The door is missing trim pieces and they forgot to include the door handle and deadbolt which I ordered. So I had to call Lowes to bring it out. The contractor had to go to a supplier to find matching trim to replace what was missing from the new door. So the contractor gets the new door installed and gets ready to install the 36 inch storm door only to find out it doesn't fit. The new door was not built to the correct size. They built it with a 34 inch door which made the opening only 31 1/4 inch wide. Minimum building code requires a minimum of 32 inch clearance so our new door does not meet code. So I lost another vacation day. So not only can Lowes not manage their contractors they also can't manage their vendors or they didn't order the correct size. I never got a consistent answer on that. So since Lowes didn't believe that their contractor can measure correctly they send out a and quot;project specialistand quot; a few days later to confirm that the door does not meet code. A few more days go by and they call and say they are ordering a new door and tell me it shouldn't take more than a few weeks this time. They planned to reuse the custom made transom window already installed to cut down on the build time since it's size won't be affected. When I asked why nobody thought it would be a good idea to measure the door when it came in and sat in their store for 2 months waiting to be installed I was told it is their policy not to touch any products before it goes to the customer. Great policy geniuses. A month goes by and no calls from Lowes so I contact them to find out they haven't so much as checked on the progress from their vendor. So they call their vendor and find out they haven't even started on the door and that it will take at least another month and a half to complete the new build. Apparently Lowes can't get them to expedite the order and they are backlogged. Gee I wonder why. So nearly 2 more months go by and the door arrives at the store again. This time I made sure they measured it before they brought it to my house. They confirmed that the door was 36 inches. So a few more weeks go by and their contractor shows up once again to do the install. I take another vacation day. Before the contractor takes the door off the truck he decides to recheck ALL the measurements again. Guess what, the door is over 2 inches shorter this time. And guess where they took the 2 inches out of. You guessed it, out of the frame for the transom window which means they cannot reuse the transom window because it won't fit in the new door. There is nothing the contractor can do to fix it. So at this point I just cancel the order and ask for my money back and for compensation for the 3 vacation days that Lowes cost me. Took weeks to get my money back and another few weeks to get them to compensate me for my time. During this 6 month long ordeal I had dealt with department managers, assistant store managers and the store manager. It was quite evident the incompetence went all the way up to the top. I would absolutely not recommend using this Lowes store for any kind of home remodeling or installation services. Save yourself time, money and grief and just hire a contractor directly which is what I get to do now since I still have a door that is not to code installed in my house. That is the extent of good things that I can say about Culver's landscaping. The project manager Nick proved completely inept and incompetent in managing the project and never once showed up on site before, during or after the job. The lighting crew was also completely incompetent but I'll get to those details shortly. April 2011: My experience started with visiting Culver's landscaping office to talk to someone about landscaping my front yard only to be told nobody was there that could talk to me about it. They took down my information and said someone would be in contact with me. A few weeks later they decide to contact me. I should have took that as a red flag and moved on. I only stuck with them because I was already a customer with their lawn treatment service for 2 years who had done a decent job. I met with the landscape designer Tyler who listened to what we wanted and prepared a design and after a few revisions gave him the go ahead and they requested a $3000 deposit at that point which I paid and was told work would start in a few weeks and would only take 2-3 days to complete the job. May 2011: I waited 3 weeks after I was told they would start the job in 2 weeks. At this point they still hadn't started the job and nobody from Culver's contacts me to let me know what's going on so I try several failed attempts at contacting this project manager Nick who over the course of several more weeks just keeps telling yeah we'll get out there in a few days only to wait another week and told the same thing again. June 2011: Finally they decide to show up. Well by they I mean the crew not the project manager. Only problem is the crew has no leader and were given no landscape designs to work from. I get my copy and give it to the crew at least until the landscape designer showed up and brought a copy for them. At this point the designer ended up acting as the project manager throughout the rest of the job. Not once did the actual project manager show up or even so much as call. Finally at the end of June they claim the job is complete. Not so much. Now lets talk about their completely incompetent lighting crew. We are talking about over $2000 worth of professional landscape lighting. First they installed mostly incorrect lights, installed the wrong lighting control box and installed it too far away from the electrical outlet so they couldn't even plug it in. After numerous failed attempts at contacting this inept project manager as well as trying to contact Mr Culver himself they finally respond after 3 weeks to let me know that the lighting crew will be back out to fix the lighting. This time they fabricate a 4 inch long extension cord which for one completely negates the point of the weather protection cover of the outlet because one end of the extension cord is exposed to the elements and 2 they don't even know how to build the cable properly because both ends of the cord had exposed wiring. I immediately removed the cord before it could get shorted out by the rain that day and start my house on fire. They finally came and replaced the box with the correct one and installed it close enough to be plugged into the outlet. They also glued down the capstones on the retaining wall which they also forgot to do. And then the next year as I'm remulching one of the rings around my tree I find out they didn't even bury the power line for the uplight they installed under the tree. I caught it with a rake. I had to dig it all out and bury it properly myself before I get electrocuted. I'm afraid of what else I might find now. August 2011: I finally receive the final bill. Needless to say I would never use their landscaping service ever again and recommend to everyone I know to avoid them. They are very overpriced and not worth the incompetence. In hindsight I should of saw the red flags and I also should have gotten quotes from other landscape companies because since then I've talked to other landscapers who say I paid thousands more than I should have for the amount of work they did. I also cancelled my lawn service with them after the year was up, as it turns out they are also overpriced for what they are providing. I now get far better lawn service for less money from Aaron's Lawn and Landscape. From start to finish the communication was excellent with Will. He let me know what time they would get to my job and everything that was going on during the work process. This is something that a lot of contractors just fail to do in my past experiences.
