"Edgar’s communications via email, phone and text were great - he always responded quickly. And he always showed up on the day he said he would work. He and his team worked very hard day to day and also had very good manners. This was a big job - garage floor, corner lot with lots of sidewalks (personal walkways too) and spruced up front steps. My husband and I both agreed on 4 stars (which on this scale reads as good and 5 stars read as great but to me 4 stars = great and 5 = excellent). We agree that after Edgar has some more experience running his company that every new job he undertakes will add to that experience and small mistakes will be a thing of the past. "

Decorative Concrete questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can screw directly into concrete, but only if you use screws specifically made for masonry or concrete. They're often labeled as masonry screws and made of steel and a special thread that provides a strong grip. However, even when using these screws, drilling a pilot hole first will make it much easier. 

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. At a minimum, concrete slabs should be at least 4 inches, but if you’re worried about the concrete cracking under the weight of heavy machinery or from the freeze-thaw patterns of your climate, you should use even thicker concrete. Shrinkage in concrete stems from the evaporation of water from the mixture as it cures. Contractors mix concrete with the proper amount of water to account for a set level of shrinkage. When the process happens unevenly between the top and lower layers of concrete, shrinkage cracks are bound to form.

Epoxy and polyurethane sealers can last five to 10 years, while acrylic sealers last two to three years or more depending on the use, wear of the surface, and type of sealer you choose. Areas that see heavy traffic or extreme ice and snow may require more frequent sealing. Test your concrete every two years to gauge how it responds to absorbing water or if it fully repels it for longer than 20 seconds.

As a general rule of thumb, allow 24 hours for penetrating sealers to cure and at least 48 hours of drying time for most topical sealers. Always check the instructions for the sealing product you’re using to determine the drying time.
