"When I was looking for an electrician power up, turned out to be the easiest and quickest way to find an electrician that I needed. They worked with me with a schedule that allowed me to continue daily activities and events I was still able to get what I needed done in a week’s time. I am extremely pleased with the outcome. I have a new outlet in my master bath and I have new smoke detectors along with carbon monoxide. I would certainly refer anyone to power up."

"Updated bathroom electrical during remodeling. They came the day after I called them for an estimate for 1 hour of work and completed it immediately. Also gave me an estimate for a household generator. I would hire them again."

"Jesse is a very pleasant young man, fully trained and capable of any electric repair or installation. He came on time, did his work quickly and cleaned up after himself. "I would recommend Nate Oakley for electrical and other repairs needed around the home. He installed 3 new outdoor light fixtures. Cleaned up the Wasp nest that had caused the front lights from working. The rates he charged were very reasonable. I asked him about the cabinet under the sink, the bottom of the cabinet had warped. He replaced it a few days later. When his schedule cleared. He also replaced the overhead light in my utility room. I also hired him to put up a backsplash in my kitchen. It is almost completed and he did a wonderful job. On the first day of the job he even carried down my garbage for me. He also took down and replaced my over the stove microwave, I will be calling him again as projects come up."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.
