"Easy to visit with. Answered questions I had. Work involved more expensive on the deck than first thought. Scott was great to call me and showed me what was needed and why. "I have been so blessed to have found Jose and have DLR Construction help me renovate my family farmstead. They did demolition, built a new garage, built a beautiful greenhouse, renovated a crib and a shop building and even cut down a tree for me! I am having him do a foundation repair and improvements on our farmhouse that is over 100 years. I never could have accomplished the transformation of my family farm without Jose. He will do anything!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

PVC decking can get slippery when wet because it’s made from plastic. However, composite and wood decking can also be slippery when wet. It’s best to wear shoes with grippy soles when walking on a wet deck, no matter the material, and to be extra cautious not to slip and fall down.

The life expectancy of deck boards varies widely based on the material, climate, and maintenance. Untreated wood boards typically last 10 to 30 years with proper care, while pressure-treated boards can last up to 50 years. Hardwoods generally outlast softwoods. Composite boards also tend to last longer than natural wood. Environmental factors like arid or humid climates can shorten a deck's lifespan. To extend the life of wood decking, it's important to consistently clean and seal it to protect against moisture, UV light, and insects.

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.
