Your first order of business should be to report the issue to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Your complaint will show up to other customers doing research and, ideally, prevent the scammer from getting to other homeowners. You can also leave a negative review on online review sites. If you got scammed out of a large amount of money, you may want to seek legal counsel for advice.

If you don’t regularly change your HVAC filter, your system will get clogged up with contaminants, and as a result have to work harder to function properly. Eventually, this can cause a multitude of problems for your HVAC system and shorten its lifespan. Additionally, failure to replace your filter can lead to higher energy bills, poor temperature regulation, and even health problems.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances. 

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

Turn your system off when you're toasty or when you're out to prevent unnecessary wear. Using the timer on your thermostat so that it switches off when it reaches a certain temperature or turns on just before you get back from work is best. An annual maintenance contract can be helpful to ensure your system receives these important services at regular intervals.
