The service team, Slaton, Esteban, and the two Johns were efficient, professional, and organized. They conducted all work in short order as promised and demonstrated great concern for our house and the rest of the yard. Clean-up was excellent and one would hardly know they were there at all except for our pretty, newly trimmed trees and the great street appearance of the house and yard. A dead tree falls based on its weight, how it leans, the state of its roots, the state of decay, and what local windstorms are like, among other factors. Since it’s hard to predict the fall’s timing, it’s important to cut down a dead tree quickly and avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Manual removal is the only method that includes removing the tree’s roots. Otherwise, root removal is considered a separate job—and depending on the complexity of your root system, you can expect to pay between $100 and $200 per hour for a tree professional to remove roots safely.

If you have a strong back and a lot of patience, you can dig out a tree stump. You'll need to use a pointed shovel to dig out the soil around the stump, cutting away roots with a pair of clippers as you go. You’ve removed enough soil when you can access the taproot at the bottom of the root ball. After you cut that major artery with a saw or loppers, you should be able to roll the stump over and haul it away.

It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but we don’t recommend it. If the tree is short enough to easily reach the top branches, and the tree is far from power lines or structures, consider renting a chainsaw and removing it yourself. Trees that are larger than that, close to electrical lines, or close to fences, homes, sheds, or other structures should only ever be removed by professionals. Not only is the work dangerous, but you could damage structures on your property in the process.

It will take you anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours per tree stump to grind and remove the stump from the ground. The larger the size, the longer it will take to remove the stump. Also, keep in mind that rocky soil may require local excavation services to loosen up large boulders before you can begin to remove the tree stump.
