"Amanda was really very good!  At first I was very skeptical, thinking why did I pay money to just speak with someone on the phone about my kitchen remodel project... but after just a few minutes of her addressing some of the issues/questions I emailed to her earlier, I knew it was worth it.  It was very clear that she knew her business and she gave me several ideas that I had not even thought about.  I told her that I would definitely recommend her to friends and I will very likely use her again myself for my next home project!

"This company performed an excellent job! One area was really a mess, and afterward, we couldn't tell there ever was a mess. The painters came out to preview the job, made suggestions for colors and gave a reasonable estimate. This was great. On the day before the job, the painters came out to prep the walls. On the day of the job, they came on time, as promised. They even performed some extra tasks that were not discussed, but appreciated! They moved appliances, shelves, railings and cleaned up! Our family is well-pleased and will definitely call on Ebony Painting and Remodeling again."

"I thought the estimate was a bit off as he wanted 70% up front. I thought that was a little too much for materials for that and I was always told not to put that much up front when you get work done. That seemed like an awful lot to me, that's why I rejected it.

He delayed me a few times when he said he would show up to do the estimate. The final estimate was not what I would consider, the amount was in the area of the other contractors, but the up front percent was off.  Never meeting him in person, his diagram, and all that I would say a B on professionalism."

"My project consisted of a rectangular fence - 200' wire, 250' chain link, 5 gates, tying into an old 50' stretch of wire fence. Slim responded quickly to my initial contact (through their website), discussed and walked through the project with me, and gave advice but did not push a more expensive alternative. He provided a verbal timeline, and a written estimate/contract. I paid upfront for materials, and for labor when the job was finished. Slim purchased and delivered all materials and displayed a sign in my yard for about 3 days. In the blazing heat, and without complaining about my very hard ground, the two-man team worked unstintingly for approximately 2 full days - and finished the job several days ahead of schedule. They were courteous, professional, and cleaned up the job site. I was assured during the final walk-through that any problems would be fixed, but so far there are none and I don't anticipate any. The cost of this project was not the cheapest estimate obtained. I chose this company 1) because there seem to be few fencers in this area, 2) a previous highly positive review on Angie's List, and 3) because I was impressed during the initial consultation. There were no mid-job adjustments to price (which has so often been my experience). Actually, the first wire bought had holes too large for my situation, and Slim swapped that out with no change in the overall bill and no delay in completion. I am very happy with the result. The fence is straight, flat in profile, and just looks good overall. I understand that this company can do a variety of tasks, including roofing, porches/decks, and small jobs. They are energetic and motivated. I will not hesitate to consider them for my next project."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

The average cost of remodeling a basement is $30 to $75 per square foot. If your space is unfinished and looks like it may need more help, use the higher number when calculating your estimated basement remodeling costs. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional 20% to the top of your estimate to cover any “what if” situations.

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

Permits may be required for major repairs, structural work, or electrical and plumbing restoration after a flood. Check with your local building department to determine permit requirements and associated fees for your flooded basement cleanup project. Obtaining the correct permits helps ensure work is done safely and up to code.

Roughing in and connecting utilities are the hardest parts of finishing a basement, and they’re the parts we typically don’t recommend doing as a DIY project. Unfortunately, your finishing timeline can be extended by weeks while you wait for contractors and inspectors to install electrical wiring, plumbing lines, and heating/cooling equipment and carry out inspections.
