Primer is always recommended for every exterior paint job because it ensures even coverage and long-lasting color. That said, there are high-end brands of paint that market themselves to be easily used without the need for a coat of primer beforehand. It’s up to you which one you choose (and have the budget for), just as long as you read the paint manufacturer’s specific instructions on the product before getting started. 

When it comes to painting your bricks, you’ve got a few options. Traditionally, lime wash (a mix of aged, burned, and crushed lime and water) was used to whitewash brick or stone. You can also find premixed brick whitewash paint that cuts out a few steps and lets you get started faster. However, for the best results, we recommend using a DIY whitewash (white acrylic paint mixed with water).

You shouldn't paint a metal fence. Painting doesn't necessarily damage a corrugated metal fence, but these types of fences are meant to flex, and paint can easily chip and break off. Latex paints can address this issue, but those tend not to be very weather-resistant. Certain paints can trap moisture in the corrugation, which can rust the metal and lead to corrosion. In many cases, you can sleep in a room painted with low-VOC paint on the same day you painted it. You’ll want to give it at least 10 hours to allow any lingering chemicals to dissipate. However, it can still have an odor for about a day after painting, so you may want to add extra ventilation or adjust your sleeping arrangements if you’re particularly sensitive. 

No-VOC paint is generally odorless and won’t emit toxic chemicals, so it’s even safer and more comfortable to sleep near after a fresh paint job.

Not only is it a good idea, but experts actually strongly recommend painting your foundation. Modern sealants and waterproof paints often protect your concrete foundation for close to 10 years. Plus, paint protects concrete from UV damage. The right type of sealant combined with an attractive paint color will not only enhance your curb appeal but also protect the concrete that’s so important to your home.
