"Chris went above and beyond to get my job done before the holidays. He not only cleaned 15 years of mold off my roof, he cleaned 30 years of dirt and mildew off the entire exterior of the house and even threw in the seawall cap for good measure. The whole place looks great!"

"Wes & Anna Clarke made an extra effort to acquire my business. Anna made an appointment for Wes to meet with me the next day. Wes walked into my home, and while talking he was thinking about how his crew could efficiently clean my floors. Wes explained the process of how he would clean my floor. The appointment process was easy. Yesterday, Wes came to my home with his crew, Louis and David. Within 15 minutes, the crew had the equipment in the door, told me the plan for the day, and then went to work. Dave and Louis worked diligently as they cleaned my floors. They checked with me as the job progressed. My floors are now clean and sparkling as I want them. Louis and Dave made sure I was satisfied before they ended the work. It is nice to find a company that has people that have pride in the work they complete. Great Finishes is a top company that is professional and efficient that I highly recommend."

"Erik was very honest about everything we needed. He came in resurfaced the pool, changed the coping to travertine, and repaired, and resurfaced the deck to concrete. He was the only company that told us the truth that putting travertine on the patio will cause problems with our sliding glass doors (water getting in). In the end, we paid more than the initial quote, however, we have an old pool which had unexpected issues and we added extra accessories as well. But even with that, his final bill was still less than some of the other companies that gave us quotes."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.
