"Shawn Auman responded to my request immediately. The ceiling in our garage had pulled away from the wall and was sagging. He came out that day, quoted the project and completed it the next day! He was professional, punctual, repaired the ceiling, and swept up all the debris. Cost $150. Job well done."

"Type1 Docks fixed my broken boat lift within a few hours. These guys are top notch, they fix the little obscure things you dont notice as well...They came on time, did a professional repair, were very knowledgable with their tradecraft, and cleaned up after the job. These guys are going to do well in this niche market. I would definetly call them again...Highly recommended !!!"

"Dillon and Levi are two very hard working men. They are on time, know what they are doing, completed my job efficiently and on time. They are very competent in their craft. I could not be more pleased with my new floating dock and newly wrapped fixed dock pilings. Have a question or issue - Nikole in the office is always available and quick to answer any and all questions. I highly recommend Seadog for your marine needs."

"Last week I had ALLtimate replace the wooden boards on my dock that had simply dry rotted with age. They did a wonderful job and I am so grateful to them for being able to remove the Brazilian pepper tree that had sprouted up through some of the boards. As anyone living in Florida can attest, the Brazilian pepper tree is a highly invasive species that can spring up in the most unusual places and are very difficult to eliminate. From start to finish, the quality of their work was outstanding. My dock is simply beautiful and I am certain that I will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. I am giving them a 5-star rating that they well deserve."

"Sean is very professional and reasonably priced. He came on a Saturday morning to fix the trim on a skylight in my kitchen that is in a very awkward location. He did not complain about it being awkward and difficult to get to, he was thorough and quick, I will use him again in the future if need be. I would highly recommend him ."

Dock Building and Repair questions, answered by experts

It is possible to build your own dock, especially for simpler projects like a small floating dock, provided you are an experienced DIYer. However, dock building is a complicated process, and hiring a professional is recommended for larger, more complex projects that involve installing pilings or engineering a suspension structure.

A professional dock builder will have the necessary tools and skills to set post foundations, ensure proper anchoring, and build a safe, durable structure that can withstand marine conditions for decades. They are also knowledgeable about local regulations and permitting requirements. In some areas, it is illegal for anyone without a marine construction license to build a dock. Hiring a professional helps avoid these potential legal headaches and ensures the project is completed safely and correctly.

Here are a few other considerations before you build, even if you're convinced you're in compliance with the law:

  • Are you damaging the environment? Bodies of water are often delicate ecosystems, and building a dock can be destructive and disruptive to the wildlife.

  • Are you blocking access? Lots of people like to use a lake, so you need to make sure your dock doesn't block public access to the water.

  • Can you enclose the dock? Just because you can build a dock doesn't mean you can build any dock you want. Some areas don't allow enclosed docks, for example.

  • Do you need to follow any specific rules or guidelines? Check with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management for any guidelines you’ll need to follow, including size and type restrictions.

Most dock builds take 1-4 weeks, depending on design, permitting, and weather conditions.

Common choices include pressure-treated wood, composite decking, and aluminum for durability and low maintenance.

You will likely need a permit to build a new dock or add to an existing one, especially if it's a permanent structure. Permit requirements vary by location, as they are typically set by local municipalities, counties, or cities rather than states. You should check with your local government or building department to determine what paperwork is required before you begin. In many areas, you may need multiple permits, including general construction permits and those designed to protect local marine life. Additionally, if you are part of a homeowner's association (HOA), they may have their own rules regarding docks, such as minimum distances between neighboring docks. It's best to check with all relevant authorities (city, county, HOA) to ensure you are in compliance. A professional dock builder can often handle the permit-pulling process for you.
