I wish I can say something positive about my experience. I certainly can if I go by photos of their work, cause it looks very good. Communicating with this company has been a nightmare, and after weeks of not having calls/texts answered, I get an email calling my tone inappropriate; to the point I was told I was not a good fit for them.. So not extend my negative complaint, I'm not going into details in the email I received. Nor am I going to give them single star. If this rating was category based, they would get 1 star on communication, especially pre-sales communication. If I were to rate them on their work, based on photos AND more importantly, first-hand experience with their reno on a friend of mine's house, they would probably get 5 stars. I will give them two stars. I leave it up to a savvy consumer to read these reviews and make their own judgment call at their own risk. My dissappointment is extreme cause their price was good, theIR work seemed to be good, and I had a lot.
Description of Work: I wanted new windows and sliders first, all impact-resistant. Next year's project will include outdoors work, including pavers (provided they do that), and entertainment area including outdoor kitchen and rest area. I can't stress enough how dissappointed I am this didn't work out.

Although he was booked several months out so couldn't do our job, he got back to me to let me know instead of leaving us hanging . Several other general contractors don't give you the courtesy of a call back or email. Despite the fact that Kevin was too busy for our job, he sent another couple of emails after he reviewed a photo and our explanation of the work that we wanted done to answer a couple questions we had. I wish he would have been available to do the work.

They were okay. I thought they were a little expensive. They were all right. I think we ask them to come back and do something else but they didn’t want to do it. I’m not thinking badly about them but I wouldn’t truly recommend them. We tried to communicate with them and then they back and did different to what we said.

I called for the service couple weeks after coupon expired. They did not respond back to me for 4 days, at which point he emailed and said coupon expired. I emailed back, reminding him even though promotional value may expire, purchase amount never expires. He never bothered to get back to me. It has been 3-4 weeks now.

There was some miscommunication about when the work was to be done, which caused me to have to take additional time off from work (although I thought I had made my expectations and understandings clear), but other than that, everything went splendidly. During the estimate phase, he correctly sensed that I wanted to maximize my benefit by doing what I could on my own, thus leaving him more time (within the hours paid by the coupon) to do what I couldn't. He was very informative. I mentioned that I hate textured ceilings and walls because they're hard to patch cleanly, and he told me what product to buy and how to apply it to correct that problem. Great service; I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Replaced a section of ceiling drywall that had been water-damaged, including textured finish. He also touched up a couple settling cracks as well.

Haven't gotten any work done. We were gone for about 7 weeks this summer but we have been in contact with Myles since April to get this on his schedule. We are still waiting...We paid for an Angie's List Big Deal and will have to get our money back and find a new contractor. We need the work completed no later than the beginning of October, which will not happen with this contractor.
Description of Work: Nothing except give us estimates with several weeks in between communications when we provided our input and/or changes to his quotes.

This member travels a lot even in their complaint they mention the were gone for 7 weeks. I have been in contact with Mr. Bastine, he and I spoke about getting it done prior to his wife posting the review. Big Deal customers are the ONLY customers I have having trouble pleasing. They buy coupons without even asking what a project will entail, They seem to be under the impression the coupon covers their entire project no matter the size.

I set up a time with the provider to do "general items" on August 13 for September 5. The contractor contacted me the week before he was scheduled to reschedule due to another job taking more time, I was fine with that. They requested a "list" of the items I wanted completed. I emailed a list and waited for a confirmation of a new date. The list is as follows: "Per our telephone conversation, the following is a list of what items I would like to have done during the "8 hours". I know that they may not all get accomplished but I wanted to go ahead and list them so you would have a good idea of the type of things that I would like done: Fix toilet valve in bathroom, fix or replace faucet handles in tub (they don't stop - keep spinning), install 2 ceiling fans (put together already) where existing fans are, put handles on exterior faucets, fix front door handle or replace knob, install towel bar, replace existing hall light fixture, installing a cabinet and shelf in laundry room, install closet organizer in closet, fix latches and springs on outside screen doors, remove baseboards from two rooms (empty), remove and replace grout in bathtub and sink area." I got a response telling me that too many of my items required plumber and electrician and he was not comfortable doing these things. I personally feel that these items are typical for a "handyman" and any general contractor should be able to do these. Putting up a fan where there is an existing fan does not require an electrician nor does tightening or replacing a leaky toilet water valve. Last I checked, caulking did not require a plumber either. So I would prefer just to receive a refund.

It is accurate that I did ask to reschedule our appointment, I do not deny that. This customer waited 1 week shy of six months to contact me after my initial 3 attempts, which she has every right to do. I was into a project that required a change order and needed more time to complete. She emailed me a list of things she wanted done, including plumbing and electrical work. Once I received the list I very politely informed her that being a licensed Contractor, my insurance doesn't cover me for plumbing or electrical. I never said I wouldn't do the other things on her list. As you can see by her comments she can be a bit sarcastic, and ask how I do kitchen and bath remodels without doing plumbing. I explained to her that I hire licensed sub contractors. With that she requested a refund.

It went very well, Myles came on time and was very professional. He fixed the ceiling hole in the garage and even built me a new cover for my access entry there. Then he built two six foot wide headers for the closet openings so he could hang the new bi-fold doors that I had purchased. He arranged for his finisher Tony to come out to mud the work so it would blend in to the original surfaces. Tony did a great job, the repairs have almost disappeared. He then came out to hang the new bi fold doors and I now have two wonderful new closets and no hole in the ceiling.
Description of Work: I needed two closet door openings modified to fit new bi-fold doors. He needed to build headers. I also needed a repair to my ceiling in my garage where my son had fallen through it and made a hole.

Myles came out and inspected job, then a few days later he submitted quote. two weeks later he removed pantry and started drywall. He made arrangements with my husband to run electrical wires and he would come back to Finnish off the holes in the ceiling and walls. After he left he told us via email that he was scheduling work two weeks out, tried repeatedly to reschedule a time for him to complete work and close off the gaping holes in our ceiling into Attic as well as hole around electrical outlets. He did not reply to several attempts to schedule work. We had to hire new contractor to complete the job.

Response to the Contractor's Response: Bottom line, the contractor said alot of things that were simply not true. "This customer bought (2) Big Deal Coupons. She originally called and wanted a shelf unit put together from IKEA. I made the appointment to go see the project, she handed me a hand drawn sketch. It was not just a shelving unit for a bar. It was a custom made 10' wide x 8' high wall to wall 3 tier entertainment center, complete with sink cabinet, (3) sets of raised panel doors, wine glass racks, glass shelving, an area for a 32" flat screen T.V.,crown molding, and a fridge cabinet. All made from select pine, with a white wash finish. " The Ikea shelving was an idea initially. The sketch simply provided a general idea of what I wished for the shelving to look like and actually, the contractor suggested to me a custom unit after talking. I was not decided on this and he said he could complete it in the timeline and in two days. The doors were going to be ordered separately, because the contractor suggested that I could do this if I opted not to get an Ikea cabinet or pre-made cabinets - so this was never going to be constructed. Raised-panel? We never asked for this. Wine glass racks were to be bought by myself and screwed onto the shelf - not required by the contractor. There was never any glass shelving asked for. I would put drink glasses on the shelf - that's it. Glass shelves are not our aesthetic at all. There was no fridge cabinet required, only space to fit the fridge in the bottom portion, which is different, nothing special was required as long as the dimensions held the fridge. At the end of the day, it is apparent to me, that the contractor did not really listen to what we wanted from the get go. The "select pine" was suggested by the contractor - we did not ask for this. So to say that we "asked for all of these things" is simply not true. We were supposed to keep talking about this to come up with the best solution, but when I called the contractor about the project, he simply did not answer. I have the phone logs of all the times I called. The only response via phone occurred when I filed a complaint against him on Angie's List after hearing of his vacation time and continual non-responsiveness surrounding my deadline. "I told her I would take the drawing home to go over it, but it would take a full day just to measure and cut all the pieces. There was lack of communication, and I told her 3 times what the cost would be." He went over the drawing, but did not provide all of this information like the needing of more days for construction and so forth until way past the deadline. He did not tell me what the remaining cost was after our hours were factored in - telling me the unit is $5000+ does not tell me anything, especially after buying the hours. He never told us if this includes materials or anything else. I was interested in finding out the difference, which was blatantly not stated. The contractor refused to tell me or give me an estimate as to how many additional hours were required to complete the project. At the end of the day, he put a price tag on what he thought the total project would be regardless of the hours and this was done well after our deadline of 6/20/13 and I feel this was done intentionally because if you go by hours, the additional hours does not add up to $5000+. To date, the contractor did not tell us the amount of hours required to finish up the project in addition to the 16 hours that was required. Material cost was estimated to be $375-$400 by the contractor via email. At the end of the day, he simply did not want to do this project regardless of the number of hours we bought already because he wanted a set amount for the project from the get go. I would have more respect for this approach if this was told from the beginning and not afterwards and details were provided, but they simply were not. The "I told her three times" is simply a fabrication of the truth, used to misguide readers into believing that he was trying to do the right thing - which is apparent that he was not after blowing the project off altogether. "I am very sorry this project didn't work out, but this type of project that takes a good deal of time, the finish product has to be perfect." The amount of hours makes sense if it can be broken down and told in advance not after deadlines, which is way unprofessional. The next response if any from the contractor needs to actually be true. Angie's list is designed to provided truthful reviews by providers, not reviews littered with follow up fabrications to hide what was really going on. This is simply a report by the contractor to save face and appear like he was doing the right thing. I was alot nicer on the first review eventhough I did not have a real reason to be, but these fabrications are simply bogus and intolerable, revealing the contractors level of interest in the project from the get go. Don't be fooled by this response. Bottom line, the contractor put us in the bad way and did not follow up when and in the way that he should have. Again, the customer is not to blame for what we "supposedly wanted," which he apparently did not listen to- because no matter how it is presented, the contractor did not meet the deadline, strung us along, did not follow up, and did not provide clear concise information to include the price differences with details about what was included even after already surpassing the deadline. This response is simply ridiculous. The truth remains that I still have an unfinished project in my house and my spouse is home. So thanks.
Description of Work: It did not go well in the end, started out ok - bought a big deal for 16 hours total of construction, met with contractor to get a shelving project done in the bar room, articulated deadline of 6/20. Informed the project can be done in 2 days built on site. Emailed to schedule multiple times, no time scheduled. 6/20 was important because this project was a surprise for my husband who was out of country for a long time now. Project not completed, contractor asked to schedule after the 4th of July and now need a 3rd day, which was first articulated via email on 6/26/13, with nothing prior to this talking about 3 days. Had to file a complaint on Angie's List, who contacted the contractor, the contractor replied by yelling on my phone and left a message about how he is not going to build anything that is ugly - dont know where this came from. If he could not meet the deadline or the scope was too large, he should have just said that from the beginning and then provide us with additional costs or we could have agreed on a different project, still giving me time to come up with a solution to meet my 6/20/13 timeline to surprise my spouse. I set 6/20/13 as the timeline because I need to have additional plumbing and other work done after to finish the rest of the room which was a different project no later than 7/1/13 which was my no kidding last day to be done because that was when my spouse returned. He provided additional cost for one extra day on 6/30 of $5200 -we bought 2 days already. We were blamed for why we "sat" on the deal for months...if a business agrees to get something done in the customers timeline and scope, then its a deal. We made arrangements in Mid May 13 for project completion no later than 6/20/13. It was over one month, plus to date no work has been done and we were not put on the schedule. I was willing to work with the contractor, but after all of the nonsense, I am spent. I get to see my spouse on 7/1/13 to have an uncompleted project, our bar and all the items still sitting out in the living room, which has been since the day after the contractor left my house to make sure everything was ready for them. I had the base electrical work and plumbing done. I bought the deal originally because this contractor was on Angies List and had good reviews. Already lost money to one contractor once and had so so work done by another. See some emails below - decide what you think: Response from Contractor verbatim on 5/29/13: How are you? I have not forgot about you, I know you are looking to get this done before the 20th. I have gone over this a few times and I am looking to see the best way to build this "on site". The base is going to basically have to have a 2x3 or 2x4 frame to be able to create a frame we can nail the styles and rails to. I will have the stock this together shortly. (no issues at this point, just waiting to get a date for work to begin). Response from Contractor 6/14/13: My employee xxxx, his mother in law unexpectedly past away last night, and he will have to be out of town for the next 3-4 days, I have 2 projects he and xxxxx were working on that I am going to have to complete. I know your project is going to take 2 days of construction, and I need to make sure I can set the days aside. I am sorry for the inconvenience, Please let me know if any other dates will work? (provided deadline of 6/24/13 as the latest- no dates scheduled) Response from Contractor 6/18/13: I'm sorry I have been playing catch up. I will have a date for you by the end of the week. (no dates provided to start work) Response from Contractor 6/21/13: I will not run this down to the wire, but I do need sometime this upcoming week. When is your husband due to return? (provided date of 7/1/13 - articulated need to finish other work too - no dates scheduled to start work) Response from Contractor 6/26/13: The challenge I have is after going through this drawing and the material list, I feel this is going to take a good 3 days to complete. The first 3 consecutive days I have available isn't til after the 4th. I know it seems like its taking awhile to set this up, but this is a big unit. A wall unit this size custom built is usually about a $5, 500-$6, 000 item. I probably have a good half day of cutting all the styles and rails. So it needs a lot of undivided attention. (first time 3 days mentioned - at this point, we are past both deadlines, with no dates scheduled for work) I went to the contractors work address on 6/26 after receiving the email above, which is a UPS box, told by the UPS rep that his mail was on hold for the last week because the contractor went on vacation. Not sure if he did or not, but no one puts their mail on hold if they are home. Was informed that the contractor comes in regularly and the UPS rep has not seen the contractor. Don't know if the contractor went on vacation, but this is conveniently during the week I had worked scheduled to be completed. I left a letter telling the contractor that I was upset about this and he strung us along and feel like we got screwed over. His inactions and/or actions reduced our ability to find someone who could take the work in such a short window. I called the contractor and left messages many times without an answer. He claims to not put us down to the wire, but after a construction deadline is not met, what does down to the wire mean then? I only received a call 6/27/13 because I had filed a complaint with Angie's list about him. Overall, the contractor seemed like a nice guy from the beginning but we apparently were supposed to not say anything about being strung along and ultimately not have our project completed. So if that makes us the bad guy, then so be it. It is ridiculous for a business owner to blame their customers for the business owners short comings and lack of clear communication. If he said he could not meet our timeline from the get go, I simply would have used this deal for another project and outsourced to find another company to do this work in the required timeframe. After dealing with how he does business and the blaming and rudeness, frankly I don't want him to get a cent from us. I do not support businesses or people like that.

This customer had a 1" dip in the middle of her 5' wide bathroom ceiling from a previous leak that damaged the drywall. When the molding was touching in the middle the ceiling, there was a 1" gap on both ends. I explained to her the issue with the ceiling needed to be fixed for the molding to fit correctly. She told me she had friends that were contractors, and they said just to bend the molding. You can't bend molding and make the joints tight, so unfortunately there were gaps up at the top between the molding and the ceiling.

The big deal offer the customer purchased was for carpentry, drywall, and framing. The customer asked if I painted, and I nicely explained I do not paint, I also explained, any caulking needed is usually done by a painter. When we got to the home, she had bought book case molding that she wanted to use for crown molding, the walls were tiles right up to the ceiling which made is very difficult to fasten the molding correctly. Right in the middle of the 4' ceiling, the was a 1" sag where the ac unit had been leaking, and allowed the ceiling to dip. This caused the molding to hit in the middle and leave a 1" gap on both edges. When I explained to her the problem, she said, The ceiling was fine, and she had contractor friends tell her to "just bend the molding to fit the ceiling. I told her I was not comfortable with that, and the right way was to address the 1" dip. She said no just do the best we could. All I could do is cut up into the sagging drywall and install the molding as tight as we could. This obviously left gaps. I am unsure as to why the grade was a C

They showed up right on time over two days and worked consistantly the whole time they were here. Both workers were easy to get along with and asked questions about anything that came up which could be a problem for me later, like removing the toilet. We agreed that taking out the toilet at this time would be an inconvience to the household, so Myles offered to come back when the floors were finished to texture behind the toilet and do touch-up work for free. Myles, the owner, went out of his way to give me the best price he could. Angie's List ran a special for $299 after I bought my $99 special, and Myles was happy to combine the two for me. I believe $399 for almost 18 man hours of work was more than a great deal! Especially for the wonderful job they did. I couldn't be happier with Myles, Tic, and South Shore Construction. I highly recommend this company.

Myles and Tory showed up on time and worked steadily to accomplish everything, even though we found some surprise wood damage. They said "don't worry we'll take care of it" and they did. They were knowledgeable, thorough and professional, taking care to do a good job. They were also friendly and flexible and explained what was going on. We will definitely be calling South Shore Construction again when we have home projects.
Description of Work: Myles completed five separate projects including drywall replacement, drywall repair, wood rot repair, tearing out and rebuilding damage under window sills and creating an attractive frame around a sliding glass door that my husband and I had installed, but never "finished" inside. We were aware that the requested work would take more than the four hours covered by the coupon, and Myles was very accommodating. He and Tory completed the work we requested and his charge for the additional work was more than fair.

This couple has done alot of work to their home themselves. Because of the hard work they have done, that combination usually equals very protective customers. I am grateful they took the chance by purchasing "The Big Deal", and are happy with our work!!!

It was very good. They did an excellent job. They were on time. They did everything quickly, and it was done very well. The repairs were great. I would use them again in the future if needed.
Description of Work: $99 for drywall repair. I had part of the ceiling on my patio was falling down and paint was peeling. And in one bedroom I had the same issue. So they retaped and replastered the areas.

This is a great young couple that took on a very big project together, they did a lot of manual labor and now have a something to be proud of. Thank you for the opportunity to add to your hard work and help make your house your beautiful home.

The owner was excellent in his approach and to deal with. I believe he honestly wants to do a top notch job for his customers. The man who actually did the job had a few communication problems in understanding what was to be done. I don't know what the base problem was but there were a couple of problems. He also did not cover everything, grabbed a new phone with mud/plaster(?) on his hands which got into all the soft buttons and will have to be replaced even though I tried to save it. That plus some stuff that fell into a printer could have been avoided by taking time to cover things up. He definitely did seem to know what he was doing, was polite and punctual so even though there were some problems I am going to give this company a top rating . I think these were just glitches and look forward to dealing with them again in the future. They get extra credit just for great attitude and I am betting covers will be on the top of the list from now on.
Description of Work: Taped, finished, and painted a ceiling.

We appreciate all the work we get, and strive to do our best. This was a Big Deal for 4 hours of drywall. It ended up to be 10 extra hours at "NO CHARGE" . My employee went back 3 days in a row. It was 14x16 living room stacked with boxes to the ceiling, in every corner. The drywall had been hung years ago and never finished. There were 1/2" gaps in between the sheets, screws that were not properly installed. My employee spent 2 hrs just in prep time clearing the area, and covered everything the best he could. He put 3 coats of mud on all the joints, orange peeled the ceiling, then rolled 2 coats of paint, he then went back the 3rd day, on his own time, and installed her register grills. He did this because of the conversations he had had with this customer and really felt bad for her situation, and wanted to help make a difference. I appreciate the "A" rating, but am disappointed she was still unhappy with our efforts.

The soffit and fascia on our 20+ old house had water damage and soft wood that allowed "critters" to come and go from our attic. We needed to have those areas replaced with new wood. We were very pleased with the work that Myles at South Shore did for us. They responded quickly to our request for service and arranged a day to take a look at the work needed and prepared an estimate that was priced well and professionally presented. They worked with our schedule to find a time that was convenient for us. The work was done quickly and neatly and everything was cleaned up when the work was finished. We are delighted with the finished work. In fact, we have several more small projects that we are looking forward to using South Shore Construction again. We look forward to working with them in the future and will be recommending them to family and friends.
Description of Work: They replaced wood soffit and fascia as needed all around the house.
