Customers say: True professional

"We hired Henry to do some work on the plant island on my front lawn. From the start communication was excellent, he is friendly and he came on time; we discussed the work that needed to be done and agreed on a very reasonable price. He and his crew did an excellent job removing the weeds, applying weed killer, fertilizing. Also cutting back some shrubs, a palm tree and straightening up and securing my hibiscus tree to a steel rod. Commended them on their quick but very satisfying work. They also cleaned up really well. We will definitely use them again."

"Called Green Gold, directly, after sourcing on Angie's List. Was asked to communicate by text, resulting in confusion about the work that needed to be done. Calvin came promptly the next morning; however, he still didn't have an understanding of the work that was requested. He did the best he could to alleviate some of the immediate problem, and additionally shoveled a path through the heavy snow to permit easier access to our firewood, at no extra cost. The heavy snow build up and icicles were removed. Unfortunately, the ice dam in the gutter could not be rectified. A very nice guy ... and a proud veteran ... who I will consider calling again if I have a need. Appreciated the senior citizen discount!"

Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

When starting the engine, you typically leave the choke on a snowblower in the "choke" or "closed" position. After starting, let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up. Then, gradually open the choke, moving it to the "open" or "run" position, allowing more air into the engine and transitioning to a normal fuel-air mixture. The exact duration varies based on the snowblower model and ambient temperature, but as a general rule, you should open the choke once the engine has stabilized and runs smoothly, typically within a few minutes.

There is no hard and fast rule about using a snowblower on a specific amount of inches, but most snow removal experts suggest using one on 2 or more inches of snow for best results. This will also depend on what type of surface you’re working on and whether the snow is dry or wet.

Be careful when choosing a product to help you remove ice from your wood deck. Never use sand, gravel, or salt, since these items can damage and scratch the wood. Instead, look for chemical de-icers that are marked as safe for wood decks or use hot water to melt snow and ice.

Whether or not an annual snow removal contract is worth it depends mainly on location. If you live in an area with frequent heavy snowfall, a yearly contract could be better than paying per clearing. If you live in an area where it only snows a few times a year, paying per snowstorm may be a better option.

When temperatures drop far enough, even rock salt can’t melt the ice. The briny solution freezes before it develops, and the salt doesn’t work, which happens around 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that wind chill and other factors impact ice-melting progress. Some ice melters, like magnesium chloride, work at colder temperatures and work better for deep winter freezes.
