"My parentâ s home on Sanibel Island was decimated @ the end of September 2022 by Hurricane Ian, requiring my immediate engagement in the restoration effort as a Florida Certified General Contractor (CGC 1525307). After a litany of truly miserable site visit experiences with a host of clowns impersonating fenestration system (i.e., building envelope windows and doors) contractors, I was fortunate enough to secure a glowing referral from the owner of a commercial engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) firm who had worked with Michael Sorrell @ Hurricane Management Group across several complex project efforts. My experience since then has been nothing short of spectacular, ranging from a (i) critical site evaluation of the legacy fenestration system that discovered a host of air and vapor penetration issues to (ii) presentation of options ranked by anticipated return of investment driven by wind and impact resistance ratings. Over the course of developing the window and door schedule, Michael demonstrated deep domain knowledge that I found incredibly refreshing in striking the optimal balance between (i) capital investment and (ii) system performance. Michael patiently answered the many questions fielded his way from my feeble mindset with kind patience, quiet respect and obvious expertise. As a (i) Certified General Contractor and (ii) Licensed Professional Engineer, I have high expectations from purveyors of the construction trades that are seldom met in both the commercial and residential arenas, given the dearth of true talent and attention to detail across the â Wild West Showâ that best describes current Florida Market Segments. Hurricane Management Group defies that norm, as they are simply loaded with technical talent that was readily apparent over the course of the recently completed installation of the fenestration system throughout my parentâ s Sanibel Home. Even in the eyes of my jaded judge of quality that have so often been bitterly disappointed in the past by a seemingly endless parade of â clown shows,â masquerading as bona fide players, I found the completed work in place to set new standards for my definition of â best in class.â In my humble opinion, there are none better on the fenestration system competitive field than Michael @ Hurricane Management Group."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

Small jobs welcome

"My house was in bad shape. Bill took the time to prep everything (caulking, scraping, stucco repair) before painting. An excellent job - and quickly done!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
