"Barrett's Plumbing saved me a ton of headaches and money. Every 2-3 weeks I used to have to call someone to pump or clear my drain, ranging anywhere from $250-$300. Barrett's Plumbing was the only one to actually realize that I needed a whole new septic tank. Finally I no longer have to worry about any backups or flooding in my house."

"Company provided next-day service to clean out our septic tank. They showed up on time and quickly located the lid without having to tear up our yard. Both men were friendly, cheerful and displayed a positive attitude about their work. In no time, they were done with the job. Finally, the price came in at $20 less than quoted on the phone. Overall, a great experience. In two years I will definitely call on Jason's again."

"Very happy with the service. Extremely knowledgeable crew, explained what they were doing in detail. It's been a few months and couldn't be happier. They removed our tank water heater and replaced it with a tankless outside. No other vendor told me they could put the water heater outside. A HUGE space saver."

"Michael and his father Jose were super professional from beginning to end with our septic tank replacement project. On the same day that I placed the request on Angie’s list, Michael called me and scheduled a visit. On the day of the visit he called me to confirm that he was on the way. Once we decided to hire them he went through all the next steps again with me and what dates to expect everything to be done. During the whole process he kept amazing communication. There were no surprises and all deadlines were done as he promised. We got the work done in 4 days, once they got the permits. Our backyard looks better now than it did before. We definitely recommend them. An excellent family business and very professional! If you are looking for a company to have your septic tank replaced, look no further! They even help you by accepting payment through Angie’s list. Highly recommend it! Thank you Michael and Jose for the amazing work done!!"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

You can check your own septic tank, but take precautions. Locate the access lid, usually buried a few inches underground, and remove it carefully. Look for the sludge and scum levels, and if they’re high, that means pumping may be necessary. Check for odors, slow drains, or pooling water around the drain field, which could indicate issues. Never enter the tank, as toxic gases can be fatal. All of that being said, a professional inspection is safer and more thorough.

Common signs that a septic tank is full include plumbing issues, odors, and changes in your yard. You may notice wastewater or sewage backing up into your home's drains, or that sinks, tubs, and toilets are draining slowly. Gurgling or bubbling sounds from the pipes are also a key indicator. Outside, you might smell foul sewage odors around your house or the septic tank area. Look for pooling water, spongy soil, or a marshy environment around the drain field. Another tell-tale sign is a patch of grass over the septic system that is suddenly lusher and greener than the rest of your lawn. If you notice any of these signs, you should contact a septic professional for an inspection and pumping.

To keep your septic tank healthy, be careful of what you flush and be conservative with water usage, as even flushing too much water down the drain can throw off the septic system’s delicate balance. Never flush anything but human waste and toilet paper down your toilet, and be sure to have the tank inspected and pumped every two to five years, depending on the size of your household and your water usage.

Recognizing signs of a failing septic system is crucial to prevent costly damage and health hazards. Foul odors in and around your home, slow drainage in sinks and toilets, or gurgling noises in plumbing fixtures can indicate problems with drainage. Lush, green patches of grass near the drain field or wastewater pooling on the ground are alarming signs that may indicate a leak in the system. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's vital to address them promptly to avoid more extensive and expensive issues.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.
