It turns out they'd been eaten through by rats in the attic for who knows how many years, had been pouring cool/hot air/$$$s into the attic, and mold everywhere. The guys came back, did a terrific job of replacing resealing, and scrubbing everything. Then they came back and blew insulation where it should be up to, as opposed to below the ceiling joists.
