"My wife and I recently worked with Nildo on our house renovation, and it was exceptional from start to finish. Nildo’s work ethic is unmatched; he's diligent and detail-oriented, handling the majority of the work himself. He doesn't subcontract for others to do the work, ensuring high standards are met. Nildo's honesty and transparency, along with valuable insights, saved us money. Initially, we hired him for popcorn ceiling removal and interior painting, but seeing his meticulous work, we expanded the project. The end result exceeded our expectations, and we’re thrilled. While I don't usually write reviews, Nildo’s work deserves recognition. I highly recommend him to anyone needing a skilled, trustworthy contractor. We'll definitely use his services for future projects. Thank you, Nildo, for making our house a home we love."

"I hired Juan from Specialty Home Renovations to originally do ceiling and trim painting. From the moment of our first contact everything was spot on, accurate, timely, professional and good value. Juan is fast and accurate, and I hired him to do additional projects which included door seals, caulking and plumbing. We worked along each other some of the time and got to know little about each other. Juan is an ethical person with a hustle and fire in this bellow to provide a great service and build his business and provide for his family. We discussed future projects and looking forward to working with Juan and Specialty Home Renovations again."

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Textured walls can increase the value of your home if the style is modern and seen as a desirable feature and not something a prospective buyer would need to remedy. A good example of this is popcorn texture versus Venetian plaster. The plaster wall would add value to your home, whereas the popcorn texture may be something a new buyer would want to remove.

Although texturing walls may not seem like a lengthy project, you’ll need to set aside between one and five days to complete it properly. The exact amount will depend on the scope of your project—one room will take less than a whole-house project. That will give you enough time for tasks that are time-consuming in and of themselves, like taping wall edges, priming the walls and letting them dry fully, and actually applying the texture and top or base paint coats.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions.

No, you do not have to worry about new popcorn ceilings having asbestos. All residential building materials used since the mid-1980s stopped including asbestos, so new popcorn ceilings have no risk of asbestos. You can still create a textured drywall ceiling with a popcorn texture if you like, but new techniques have no risk of adding asbestos.
