"Gilbert Design was excellent to work with. They have a great showroom on Clark Road. The design process was smooth, buildout and installation went as promised, and I’m very pleased with the results. I will definitely recommend."

"Five stars for Empire Builders & Remodeling. They built our entire home from the ground up on our vacant lot in Rotonda West, Florida. The project was handled professionally from start to finish. Vitaliy communicated well, handled the permitting process, stayed within the budget we discussed, and made sure the construction stayed on track. He was always responsive and straightforward whenever we had questions. We were especially happy with the quality of the workmanship and attention to detail throughout the house. Everything came together very well, and they even finished a little ahead of our scheduled move-in date. We also appreciate that Vitaliy has remained responsive after the project was completed. It's reassuring to work with a builder who doesn't disappear once the job is finished. Overall, it was a very positive building experience. We would definitely recommend Empire Builders & Remodeling and plan on working with them again in the future."

"I’ve been working with Alex for over 20 years. Have no regrets. He’s the best Drywall guy I’ve ever known. Believe me when I tell you.I used to run a drywall company . I’m a general contractor now I’ve been building houses for the last three years and I don’t give my work to anyone else. If you’re not hiring Alex, you’re making a mistake."

"Angela and her crew did an amazing job. They built the garage to my specification exactly the way I wanted. All their workers were experts and what they did respectful very good people. Not only that but they navigated Charlotte county's permit process better than any contractor I have had."

"What a easy way to get your home remodeling projects done. Bronson walked us through the entire process and timeline. It was such a great experience from start to finish. I never felt like other parts of my house were a complete mess with construction. The budget we agreed on was met. Bronson is extremely friendly and communicates great until the project is finished. "This company saved me from an unlicensed contractor. I called and explained my situation and they were very responsive. They came out quickly. They evaluated my flooring and told me that I did not have to replace the subfloor. He offered a solution that saved me time and money. Upon arrival, they put down materials to protect my floors and walls. The employees were metered and detailed and did not rush the job. They were very accommodating with all of my questions and provided answers that made me confident in the project. I already have them lined up for another job. Would recommend to anyone!!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.
