My wife, a former licensed property and casualty insurance agent herself, and a former underwriter, has a pretty extensive insurance background. I have 2 degrees in Engineering, one a graduate degree. So between the 2 of us, we can usually figure most things out with a little thought and discussion. We spent a good bit of time trying to figure this one out, but are still a little perplexed (or maybe surprised). In any event, we wrote this review not to slam State Farm or the agent, but to capture our experience and perceptions in the hope that others would benefit from them (regardless of whether dealing with this agent, this company, or any other). We did actually deal with a second company at the same time, and that experience was nothing like the one described below. But it seems likely that some aspects of what we ran into with State Farm are probably applicable when dealing with other agents and companies. Our Experience and Perspectives: There were times the agent (and/or his employee) talked for long periods of time, covering a lot of subjects in one long burst. There were times they talked over us when we tried to pause them in order to ask a question. The agent’s employee gave multiple answers to the same question, even when asked the same question twice in a row. This made it hard to know which answer was correct. It was our perception that in some cases, he was trying to avoid answering our questions. One jugular issue was forms the agency produced after we had disclosed our medical history, signed the applications, and left the office. They indicated that they had forgotten these forms, and emailed them to us, already filled out, needing only our signatures. The forms were used to cash in part of an existing policy in order to pay for a new policy. Although we had an existing policy with State Farm for over 16 years, it was not the type of policy that could be cashed in—it had no cash value. It was a simple term policy. Nevertheless, they insisted we had to sign these forms. It was a requirement and underwriting could not move forward without them. It was never clear if this was a Florida requirement, or a State Farm imposed requirement, or something else—that was one of the questions we couldn't’t get a straight answer on. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and took a look at the forms that evening. Unfortunately, many of the numbers and dates on the forms were wrong. There’s no other way to put it—they were just wrong. My wife and I tried to redline, correct, and initial the errors, but were told our corrections were not acceptable, and we had to sign the forms as they had been provided to us. For example, the forms showed the premiums as exactly twice what we had been quoted in writing just a few days prior. The forms also indicated that because funds from our existing policy were being used to pay for the new policy, our existing policy would be terminated on a specific, “estimated” date. But wait, our existing policy had no cash value, it could not be used to pay for anything. The agent and his employee both confirmed the forms didn’t even apply to our existing policy, or the policy being quoted. But still those forms needed to be signed, and they needed to have the specific dates and numbers entered by the agency. So this ‘cancelation’ verbiage was a complete surprise to us. Prior to this we had been told (repeatedly) we would have to cancel our existing policy ourselves (since it was with a different State Farm agent several hours away). We started to become concerned. With the errors in the dates on the forms, could we somehow end up without either policy in force? Why now, after we had already applied, and already disclosed our medical history, are we being told to sign forms acknowledging that our existing policy could be canceled as part of the process of getting a quote? Actually, this was another one of the questions we kept asking, but could never get a straight answer. The answers would start off with, “let me assure you that won’t happen” but then went into longwinded explanations of the circumstances under which it might happen. So we’d ask again, and we’d get another very longwinded non-answer. By this point we were very suspicious about the entire process. Something seemed off. These last minute forms went on to show that the new policy would take effect on the date we applied (a few days prior to us receiving the forms). Trouble is, we purposely declined the ‘opportunity’ to pre-pay any premiums up front. We simply wanted to go through the application and underwriting process in order to get a firm premium offer—not the “let’s reel them in with low numbers” quote. But now we were told to sign forms agreeing to have the new policy go into effect 1 month before it was supposed to, 1 month before any premiums were being paid. Insurance is traditionally paid in advance. We all know what happens when a policy is not paid for—it gets canceled. Surely this could not have been a ploy to cancel our existing policy as part of the “application process”, then cancel the new policy for non-payment? Did State Farm decide after hearing our medical history that they needed to find a way to cancel our existing policy before both of us keeled over dead, and they would have to pay a claim? (We are both in pretty good health, but we’re not twenty-something that are too young to have a medical history yet.) It seems unlikely there was a concerted effort to commit fraud here. However, it’s unclear that everything was on the level. While on the phone with the agent and his employee (trying to understand the implications of the erroneous dates and costs on these forms), things deteriorated to the point that the agent just hung up on us. He apologized later, in writing, citing his frustration that we did not trust him or State Farm enough to just sign the forms. Obviously we did not sign the forms, and we’ve since parted ways with this agent. We won’t be back to this agent, or any other State Farm agent going forward (except to cancel our existing policy once it’s replaced with something more cost-effective). There are just so many other good options out there (and plenty of bad ones too—but to be sure, plenty of good ones). Again, we hope that after having read this, at least some will be a little better prepared as they shop for life insurance."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/fl/melbourne/brian-west-reviews-7587169.htm"},"position":10}]}
