"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"I hired Total Home Roofing and consulted with their Sales Rep Jordan Cronlund. My roof was looking very neglected and I knew it was going to be time to get some items repaired. I held off for a few month but once I spoke with Jordan he educated me on the options I could entertain. I decided to sign and try to see if my insurance would cover the cost of a new roof replacement. It was a long shot but, Total Home Roofing couldn't have made it any easier. They provided genuine reassurance throughout the process and, ultimately, for the cost of my deductible I was able to get a new roof. I can't imagine the work completed on the back-end but as a customer, it felt easy and convenient. Thank you to the company, all the individuals in the back-end and Jordan for helping me out. Since then, I've have been referring THR and Jordan to all inquiring about any roofing job."

"Finally, I found an honest contractor in this town! ROC construction was the best experience I have had with any contractor that I have hired. Leno and his crew were on time, worked extremely hard and even cleaned up each night. Sassan went the extra mile by following up when the insurance carrier lost our documentation twice. Sassan understands the proper way to conduct business and I will call him for any contracting needs in the future. I highly recommend ROC construction"

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

Most cottages are around 1,000 square feet, making them smaller than most other styles. However, cottages are defined more by their decor and architectural focus on simplicity, functionality, and a connection to nature than they are by a rigid square footage or floor plan. While cottages are defined more by their charm and appearance than size, the smaller footprint does help maximize the comfort and charm, and it keeps the focus on connection to nature and family.

In most cases, you should get an architect before you hire a builder. An architect will be the one to draw up formal plans for your project, including guidelines and even material lists for your builder to follow during construction. Many architects can even help you find builders, choose one for your project, and negotiate prices. Some are also willing to act as project managers throughout the process, working closely with a builder from start to finish.

No, a structural engineer is not the same as a builder. A structural engineer is an expert in all things related to the structural integrity of a building. The structural engineer is responsible for calculating the correct materials in terms of load-bearing capacity and overall structural safety. Structural engineers do not perform the actual building of the house or other structures. Rather, the builder executes the plans and designs specified by the structural engineer.
