"Paul was the nicest guy. I immediately trusted him, and that goes a long way for me when hiring someone. He was honest and fair. He came to give me the quote as soon as I had spoken with him, and had everything ordered and installed within 3 weeks, and a very popular closet company was just coming over the day of his install to see me for the first time to start the quote! Needless to say, I just had the other company leave. It had been so long since I’d made the appointment I’d forgotten they were even coming. Paul and his worker came and finished the master closet job in less than 5 hours, and when they went to lunch they even offered to bring me lunch as well! That never happens, except with Paul! He’s just so kind. It was a gourmet meal at McDonalds, and I couldn’t believe my luck (who doesn’t love their fries!!! Lol) When he was done he made me come and inspect his work and I was amazed by how awesome it was. The materials were solid, and the work was sturdy, and it was absolutely perfect! He designed it just to fit my needs. I can’t wait to save up more money to have him do my other closets. He’s definitely earned my business for life, and I will recommend him to anyone who will listen! Thanks again Paul! You guys Rock!!!"

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

If your couch is damaged, you are not out of options. You might try fixing it on your own, bring in a furniture repair specialist, or opt to get rid of it responsibly. Depending on its condition, you could donate, sell, recycle, or drop it off at a local scrap facility.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

It is often worthwhile to refinish or restore furniture, especially for high-quality, older, antique, or sentimental pieces. Older furniture tends to have better durability than modern, mass-produced items, and refinishing can cost about one-third of the price of replacement. To determine if it's cost-effective, compare quotes from local refinishing services with the price of a new, similar piece. Refinishing can refresh a piece's look and extend its lifespan. However, it may not be worth it for newer furniture made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood, or for items with major structural damage. A professional can help you assess the piece and decide on the best course of action.

To safeguard your furniture and upholstered items, it's best to use plastic wrap or specially-made plastic sofa covers. However, you should avoid wrapping wooden furniture in plastic if you plan on storing it, as plastic can trap moisture and warp the wood, plus it may damage certain finishes. In either case, old blankets or moving blankets make excellent alternatives. For protecting delicate glass table tops and mirrors, bubble wrap is always a reliable choice.
