"5 Star Heating and Air is a phenomenal company!!!! Brandon represents the name of his company; he’s a “5-STAR” young man who truly knows the business of Heating and Air Conditioning!!!! I am extremely pleased with their response time to my initial call, the timely manner in their performance of the repair issues that needed to be done...and, most importantly, their professionalism they demonstrated at my home. I would highly recommend this company....so much so that I would do a commercial for their company!!! Their company is well-named, “5 Stars!!!!”"

"HVAC supply ducts and dryer vent cleaning....performed by Hunter, Austin, & Tyler...professional in every way...considerably higher than other bids but believe quality of work was worth it...did have residual small flecks of black mold coming from kitchen and entry way vents for several days afterward before ceasing to do so, but was told that was not unusual."

"After having another company tell me it was a Reverse Valve issue and pretty much said "good luck" as he left, I called Fenwick/Weychoff and they had a tech out by 9pm same day. The tech, Mark Wesley, not only fixed a simple issue and got my house cool that same day, but only charged me the base price for the service call. It ended up being an issue with the thermostat. Nothing wrong with the reverse valve. Thanks, Mark, and thanks, Angi, for recommending Fenwick/Weychoff! Respectful and honest. They've got my business from now on!"

"I needed a new air conditioner and saw a promotion at Home Depot. The salesman who responded and came to my house was very patient and personable. The installers were also very personable, dedicated, and knowledgeable. Overall, the experience of having a new air conditioner and air handler with a heat pump installed was pleasant."

"Old AC quit and we thought it just needed a charge. Called 1 hr heating and ac, set appt for next day. The tech was on time very professional and honest. Our system was completely empty he advised us that the price to completely fill the system was about a grand and told us it is our call but ultimately the system has a leak, he could fill it and charge us the price and be without ac not much longer than a season if we were lucky. We chose to just replace the system. The sales rep was out here on time the next day he was also very professional and nice, then at the end of that meeting we were lucky enough to be able to get the AC installed the very next day which was Friday. The install guys were great also! They arrived early to my surprise which I was happy about. I was quoted about 6 to 8 hrs for install and the install team was quick 4 and a half hrs later new system was in and running great. It was a wonderful experience for such a large task"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

No. Your furnace does not run your air conditioner. Both units use the same system of ductwork to move conditioned air throughout your home, but you can have a furnace without having an air conditioner and vice versa. Furnaces are only for heating your home. You can buy a system that does both, however, like a split system or a heat pump (yes, heat pumps cool, too).

There are ways to detect a refrigerant leak with several different testing methods. However, most homeowners can figure out something’s wrong with their AC unit by noticing these common signs:

  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil

  • Water leaks near the AC unit

  • Frequent hissing sounds

  • Increased electric bills

  • Unit takes longer than usual to cool

  • Unit is blowing hot air

Here’s how AC professionals will clean your AC coils:

  1. Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker to the unit in your circuit breaker box.

  2. Remove the faceplate.

  3. Spray a vacuum hose attachment or compressed air can to remove debris, dust, dirt, and grime.

  4. Use a soft-bristled fin comb to remove stubborn caked-on debris.

  5. Use the vacuum hose to suck up any extra debris.

  6. Take a coil-safe cleaning solution and spray it onto the coils. Try to choose a no-rinse solution.

  7. Let the solution sit for at least 15 minutes.

  8. Gently wipe away loosened grime and debris with a microfiber cloth.

  9. Reattach the faceplate, plug in your AC system, or turn the breaker back on.

The simplest indicator is how long it’s been since your last tune-up. You should schedule an annual AC tune-up each spring. Beyond that, there are multiple signs that your AC needs a quick check by a professional. These issues include higher-than-average energy bills, decreased air flow from vents, higher indoor temperatures, and an air conditioning unit that stays on all the time or frequently turns on and off.

You can protect your air conditioner in the winter by turning off the power at the thermostat and performing routine HVAC maintenance in the spring. Regular maintenance, cleaning, and repair of your AC unit helps protect it and extend its life span. If you have a window AC unit, remove it from the window and store it in a dry place during the winter. Window units cannot withstand freezing temperatures. Keeping them in your window also allows cold air to seep into your home.
