"RSA Paving customer service is top notch from start to finish. I'm amazed at the extreme care that was taken. Considering I live on a narrow street where parking is at a premium & neighbors get ticked off easily & rightfully so. No debris was left, no neighbors overly inconvenienced & the street looked like RSA was never here. Rich & his crew get a big thumbs up from me. Jim L Halethorpe, Md"

"One of three quotes received. Only one to provide information on industry concrete standards, and ensure they would be met. Also addressed drainage issues around pool and outside of lanai ensuring they would be addressed. Crew showed up on time and worked all day. At the end of each day, they cleaned up after themselves. Matt is quick to respond if you have a question. Company is competitively priced. Highly recommend Tampa Hardscapes."

"Aldo's has trimmed our trees, leveled our backyard, previously. This time (yesterday) Aldo's scrubbed and pressure washed our extra large parking area, continuing on with the porches and paver paths on the sides of the house. We had developed so much mold it just had to be done. Then, they scrubbed and pressure washed our large deck. The mold had made the wood very slippery when wet. The Aldo's crew also replaced all the deck furniture. Their clean-up after the job always leaves it looking great. These hard working gentlemen have always done a beautiful job for us. Their bid on the job been affordable and they stand by that bid. They are so good that we also enjoy tipping each worker separately at the end. Big "Thank You" to Aldo's. They are our go-to guys. "I had Novus Outdoor replace my old concrete driveway and expand it with pavers, and I’m really happy with how everything turned out. The new driveway looks great and gives us a lot more parking space, which was exactly what we needed. The crew was easy to work with, showed up when they said they would, and kept things moving without any hassle. You can tell they take pride in their work because the finished product looks clean and well done. I’d definitely recommend Novus Outdoor if you’re thinking about updating your driveway or adding pavers."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

The average cost to repair an asphalt driveway is around $2,459 to $2,500. However, prices can range from $100 for minor DIY crack filling to over $4,000 for more extensive professional work. Costs are often calculated per foot, with minor repairs costing $1 to $3 per linear foot and heavier damage like potholes, sinking, or crumbling costing $2 to $5 per linear foot. Patching smaller potholes can cost around $2 to $3 per square foot. The final price depends on the severity and extent of the damage, driveway design, local contractor rates, and whether sealing is included. For major repairs, it is recommended to hire a professional, and you may get a better deal by bundling repair and sealing services together.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

Maintaining a driveway depends on its material. For concrete and asphalt, it's best to clean the surface thoroughly twice a year with a stiff broom and a pressure washer to remove accumulated dirt and debris. Sealing the driveway is crucial to protect it from water damage and freeze-thaw cycles. Before applying a sealant, pressure wash the surface to remove any loose sealant, dirt, or stains, as sealing over them will trap them. Any cracks or expansion joints should be filled with a flexible polyurethane caulk or asphalt sealer. In colder climates, use sand instead of salt for de-icing. Sand helps melt snow and ice without accelerating the freeze-thaw process, which can cause cracks.

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.
