"Both Geoff and Pierce were thorough and amazing. Watching Pierce install a long tube from the ceiling to the roof connection was mind blowing. He made it look so easy. Both tubes have brought a tremendous amount of light into the house. Made me wish I had more for them to do."

"Overall, the re-roofing job done by Roofing USA was a good job; several aspects were done especially well, to my eye. There were also a few things that were not done so well. For background, this was a roof replacement job done on a pitched roof due to hail damage. I should note that the new roof passed the city inspector’s permit inspection with no corrections required. The estimate given us was fair and competitive with the other two estimates received. It was not the lowest, but we selected Roofing USA based on both price and other considerations. One of those was an ad in the Angie’s List magazine that offered a discount of up to $500 for roof replacements. More about that later. One thing I particularly asked each company’s estimator was whether there would be at least one person on the work crew who was fully conversant in English, recognizing that I am not very fluent in any other language and recalling a less-than-effective communication situation I had had with a contractor crew on a previous job. I was assured that there would be. Well, that was not the case. As well as I could determine none of the crew except the crew chief were at all conversant in English, and the crew chief’s English was quite limited. I don’t fault the crew; I wish the assurance I was given had been fulfilled by the company management when the crew was assigned. There were a few cases of somewhat sloppy work. In one case, a few avoidable smudges of black plastic adhesive/sealant appeared on the yellowish stucco of the house walls. The existing flashing on the lower sides of the cooler ducting and the chimney ended up quite bent and sloppily sealed where the shingles were slid under the flashing. And in the most striking case, the person who installed the skylights did not refer to or follow the installation instructions that came with the new units and did not install all of the provided attachment screws, apparently out of frustration with the way his drill-driver tool stripped out the screw heads. There were several positive aspects of the job, though. For example, the crew showed up at the promised time each day and worked past “quitting time” when necessary. Also, the closed-cut valleys were cut dead straight (even without snapping a chalk-line, I believe). The modified-bitumen covering for the low-slope patio roof was installed well and accurately. There were always a sufficient number of nails used on each shingle. On billing, the estimate was exactly adhered to - no mysterious add-ons. And I was especially pleased that the crew supervisor accommodated my concerns in the following situation. On the second planned day of the work, it had rained overnight and was raining lightly in the morning when the crew arrived, intending to continue the job. I expressed concern to the crew supervisor about installing shingles over the wet underlayment. After evaluating the condition of the roof, he concurred, and it was agreed that the crew would continue the next day, after the roof had dried. Going back to the advertised discount – when I went to the contractor’s office to settle the bill, I was told that they were no longer honoring that discount, since Angie’s List had been told to pull the ad a number of months ago but had not. Whatever the facts of the situation, I was generally dissatisfied by this turn of events. The contractor would not adhere to what the ad said, and a phone complaint to Angie’s List elicited a refusal from them to pay the discount amount. Angie’s List and the contractor need to resolve this situation or risk many more dissatisfied customers for both of them."

"I contacted Sunrise Roofing Services for a roof replacement. Karel gave me an estimate was thorough, timely, and to the penny accurate. He explained the entire process including providing insurance and license information. He installed a tarp to prevent any further leaks into my house (no additional cost). The project was delayed because I was out of town so we agreed to a no earlier than start date. When I returned they started the project within one day of that date. They showed up on time (exactly) and I ask to see the permit. They pointed to my front door where they had posted it prior to ringing the bell. I was impressed. The old roof was removed and Florida required nailing patterns completed (including the nailing affidavit). The decking was repaired. A new underlayment, roof, vents, skylights, and flashings were installed. Cleanup was thorough. All of this was completed in one day including local building permit inspections. The following day the owner, Maria Flores, came by for payment. She came prepared with Lien release forms, warranty information, affidavit of contractors final payment as well as an invoice. We settled up while discussing her business. I relayed to her the things that impressed me most. 1. She has an actual place of business (not working out of her house like too many contractors) 2. No down payment required. 3. All of the roof installers are employees (not day workers). 4. All the paperwork was completed and presented in a timely manner. 5. Her employees are top notch. Installing a roof in the summertime in Florida is brutal. They probably deserve a raise. 6. Her company is a certified installer of the CertainTeed roofing line of products. I verified this with CertainTeed prior to contracting her. Maria was cordial, well prepared, and thorough. I found that she runs a professional business with good people and would have no problem recommending her to everyone."

"I found them through Angie's List. They gave us a pretty good quote and we looked at it competitively. They provided pretty fast service. One downside for them was that they were not responsive with regards to photos that they said they would provide of the work. We had a lot of nails throughout the yard that were not cleaned up. We tried to communicate with them repeatedly, but we had not had any feedback. Other than that the work was fine. Their pricing was definitely middle of the range and one of the reasons we went with them was because they had a good warranty on it. The work was done pretty fast and other than the two issues I mentioned before I think we were satisfied with the quality of work. They were not responsive after the project was done. This was the first time I used this company. After the fact was not handled well."

"Everyone at Solar Shield was very nice and professional. We had a few concerns when the moisture barrier was installed and we still had rain in our bedroom. Frank got it corrected the next day, and finished the roof the following week. The good news: very nice looking roof with no more leaks. The bad news: we got pictures of the hurricane straps installed and had the roof inspected by our insurance company. They found that the hurricane straps installed were not up to their standards and neither was the moisture barrier. They also found multiple slats (we didn’t have decking that covered the whole roof - old house) that were split and compromised during the work, so we were unable to qualify for any insurance discounts. Overall, we have a nice looking roof - top of the line from Solar Shield Industries. Hopefully, it will last a lifetime. But unfortunately, we have some decking remediation that needs to be done and we still need hurricane straps, which will probably be clips now. Not a big enough deal for me to raise a stink. I can retro clips and repair the few decking issues from the attic & under siding. And apparently, the moisture barrier is just not what the insurance company accepts as a “moisture barrier.”"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Prevent future skylight issues by conducting regular inspections, ensuring gutters are clean to prevent water pooling, applying protective sealants periodically, and trimming overhanging branches that might cause physical damage to the skylight.

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.
