"I would highly recommend Ray, from Screws and Nails Home repair. He was professional and friendly from start to finish. Ray installed a door, added wall molding, and built a half wall in entryway. The finished work is quality craftsmanship and added to our home."

"Southern Rust Woodworks has the best custom built products around. I have several pieces he has made for me, and I get asked all the time who did them and how to contact him. He can make anything you want! Or if you donâ t have an idea, he has great ideas himself. My house is basically a Southern Rust Woodworks showcase. Love all my pieces and they are excellent quality. Love all his products!!!"

"This 70+ yr old table needed refinishing due to neglect as well as sitting in water during a hurricane flood. It was refinished to perfection! Beautiful wood on top and the legs look unblemished. Would do it again!"

"Best experience hands down! We were able to completely renovate our kitchen countertops for a very reasonable price and top quality product and service! They were fast, professional and very easy to work with. We had beautiful quartz countertops laid right on top of our laminate countertops. The salesperson/ design consultant visits and assesses with product and estimates. Someone then schedules a time to come out and measure and template the space and next visit voila new and beautiful counters ready to go! I would recommend to all! Great company and even better product and service!"

"Todd was recommended by a painter who had done extensive indoor painting for us years ago. Todd came to look over the job which required some drywall repair and texture paint preparation. We received his estimate the next day and hired him immediately. He was agreeable to working around the schedules of electricians as well as the wall unit builder. He is personable, shows up when he says he will, and does great work."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Many modern homes have soffits, but older ones don’t, and you may be wondering why. Older homes have eaves that extend further beyond the home and help to circulate air, negating the need for a soffit. This style of building has faded away, therefore, modern homes need separate soffit installation. Modern soffits are more efficient than this older style and require less material to construct, saving homeowners money.

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.

While carpenters and woodworkers perform similar tasks, their focus differs. A carpenter is typically responsible for the structural woodwork involved in construction, such as framing, installing sheathing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and installing trusses. In contrast, a woodworker handles more intricate and custom projects, like building custom furniture, installing wainscoting, and creating detailed interior trim and moldings. Based on these definitions, many woodworkers can perform the tasks of a carpenter, but it's always best to discuss your specific project with a professional to ensure they have the necessary skills.

If you don’t have a coping saw, you can use an angle grinder to cope crown molding, but it takes a little more precision. Place your molding down on your workbench, angle the grinder at a 45-degree angle toward the molding, and back cut the wood. You’ll need to carefully angle your grinder to accommodate the curves in the wood, and aim to remove around 1 inch from the profile of the molding.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.
