"The workers are knowledgeable courteous and friendly. The new driveway looks great. The difficult area, where my walk meets my driveway, has been modified to direct water away from my walk and garage. The new driveway is level with a slight slope away from my garage. I would rehire these people again if I had another asphalt project."

"Dealing with the owner, Steve, all went well from start to finish. I called him and left a message. Within an hour he returned my call. I asked him if he did concrete driveway repair and if so could he give me a quote on how much it would cost. The same day he came out looked at driveway and quoted me his price. The next day I called him and asked him to do the job. Within four days the job was completed. Excellent work. I would strongly recommend his service to anyone needing this type of work. "They called out of the blue and we have needed it done for a long time. He said they were giving a big discount to keep staff working through covid-19. I had never gotten a quote for it so I don't know if it was a good price but it seemed reasonable. They showed up the very next day and did the job. We tend to have flooding so they graded to flow into the front yard and dug a trench to help get the water flowing. It still puddles some when it rains heavy but is much better."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is possible to pave over an existing driveway, but whether it's the right choice depends on several factors. If the underlying structure of your current driveway is still strong, concrete or asphalt resurfacing can be a cost-effective way to prolong its life. However, if your driveway has significant issues like potholes, deep cracks, or other inconsistencies, it is best to remove the old driveway and start from scratch. Key factors to consider include the current driveway's condition, the compatibility of the new material, the added thickness and height, and the necessary surface preparation.

You can expect your asphalt pavement to last anywhere from 20 to 30 years, or 25 years on average. The life expectancy of your asphalt driveway depends on the climate, the amount of traffic, and how well you maintain it. While you can’t necessarily control some of these factors, you can control the amount of maintenance effort you put into your driveway.

To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.

New asphalt typically needs 24 to 72 hours to dry before it can handle light foot traffic and careful driving. Although it may appear solid after a few days, the full curing process, where the asphalt reaches its peak strength, takes much longer—generally from 30 days to a year.

During this extended curing time, the surface remains relatively soft and can be damaged by heavy vehicles, sharp objects, or high temperatures. To protect your investment, it's best to avoid parking heavy machinery on the asphalt until it has fully cured.

The exact time required for drying and curing depends on several factors, including the weather, the specific asphalt mix, and its thickness. For the most accurate advice tailored to your situation, consult with your asphalt contractor.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.
