"Website Diane George Local Guide·10 reviews Garrett from lvl Locksmith is your best choice when choosing a locksmith. I didn't realize there is so much involved with re-keying locks, fixing a latch, making all your outside doors open with the same key, yada, yada, yada. Needless to say, Garrett had a response for all of my requests and didn't run the other way. He was simply incredible and handled all those tasks without blinking an eye and made a few suggestions that I hadn't even thought of. All this started when someone said my door handle was sticking. I asked Garrett several questions while he was there and I can tell you, he is honest, extremely knowledgeable and gets the job done quickly. He could have sold me a new door handle for the front door, which would have been expensive because there are 4 sets on the door, but he just fixed the latch for me for the time being. We know there's a possibility of it eventually needing to be replaced but we'll ride it out in the meantime. We look forward to using his service again and you definitely can feel comfortable calling lvl Locksmith as well. Thanks Garrett for your help!"

"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Yes, as long as it’s thick enough for the deadbolt. Most interior hollow core doors are at least 1 1/2-inches thick, which is usually the minimum requirement for a deadbolt. You’ll want to find the lock block first before installing. Also, most hollow doors require additional reinforcement for locks, such as a reinforcement plate or plywood block.

Lock bumping is a technique locksmiths use to quickly and quietly open a pin tumbler lock, typically found in most types of deadbolts. It involves inserting a specially crafted key, or bump key, into the lock and tapping or "bumping" it with a mallet or similar tool. The force applied causes the lock's pins to jump momentarily, allowing the lock to be turned and opened. Unfortunately, thieves also use this technique to break into homes. Luckily, products like a deadbolt strap will fortify your lock.

Standard residential deadbolt locks come with a steel bolt that locks your door into place using a key (or keypad) on one side and a thumb turn on the other. When you lock it, the bolt slides into a strike plate on your door jamb to secure your door shut.

It is best to use a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, for door locks. Unlike popular oil-based lubricants, dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating that does not attract dust, dirt, and other debris. Using an oil-based lubricant can cause these particles to build up inside the lock, making it difficult to operate or even damaging the internal mechanism. You can find dry lubricants, some of which are made specifically for locks, at most hardware stores.

Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey.
