"Norman seems to be a good guy. He came when promised, did the job quickly and well. Don't hire him if you have locks to put in where he has to do any physical climbing or such... he's not in great shape and huffs and puffs just doing a regular lock install while sitting on a seat he brings. He doesn't do any cleanup, but he never promised any, either. He did leave me the lever-style doorknobs that he took out when he replaced them with regular knobs so that someone could reinstall them if they wanted to, if I sold the house. DO tell him what EXACT knobs or levers you want, or buy them yourself, ahead of time. I would hire him again."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Whether or not keyless door locks are safe and trustworthy depends on the visibility of the programming code—and a trespasser’s determination. Even if you carefully guard entry and programming codes, those trying to break in may be able to crack open the lock’s faceplate with a screwdriver and change the codes. The same goes for manual models.

Some find smart locks the safest option because it’s harder to manipulate codes without access to your phone. But it’s possible to get hacked even then. Consider installing an extended security system, like door and window alarms or surveillance cameras, to enhance security.

It’s possible, but depends on the design of your lock. Some door locks that lack a keyhole do boast a small hole on the exterior handle or knob. This hole’s primary function is to allow water to drain out of the lock, in addition to giving homeowners an easy spot to insert lubrication. However, you can typically use a paperclip in this pinhole to unlock the door by manipulating the mechanism inside.

You can cut a door knob off using a sawzall, but you risk causing additional damage to the door itself. You’ll also need to completely replace the door knob, costing you extra money and another trip to the hardware store.

Costs depend on lock type, service complexity, labor, emergency availability, and whether security system integration is needed.

Begin by checking the power source, typically a battery or wired connection. Ensure the battery is installed correctly, has sufficient charge, and isn't corroded. If it's a wired lock, examine the electrical connections to confirm they are secure and free from damage. Additionally, inspect the lock's programming or settings. Confirm that user codes or access credentials are programmed correctly and that any remote control devices are paired and functional.
