This may come down to personal preference, but it’s generally best to paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Why? Painting the ceiling can be more physically demanding, and painting the ceiling last may result in drips or splatters that would mess up freshly painted walls. The best temperature to paint a pool deck is between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, because many paints and sealers require temperatures warm enough for the chemical reaction to take place for proper curing. The paint should not be allowed to freeze, and temperatures above 90 degrees can cause the paint to dry too quickly, also preventing the chemical reaction from following through to completion.

While you can use wall paint on the ceiling, there are some differences between ceiling and wall paint. Ceiling paint tends to be thicker, cover discoloration better, and comes in a more limited color selection. Wall paint is thinner, holds up to regular cleaning better, and is available in an almost endless variety of colors.

Using a roller allows you to apply a mist coat quickly to avoid uneven spots while drying, but it can create streaks and splatters from the watery paint. Applying with a paintbrush can take longer but may be less messy. There are pros and cons to using either a roller or a brush for the mist coat. The mist coat is diluted, so it can be messier to work with, but it also dries quickly.

Using a neutral paint palette is the best way to help your house appeal to a wide range of buyers. Think beyond bright whites and overexposed grays, though—taupes, ivories, and off-whites can add visual interest without looking too stark.
