Customers say: True professional

"We recently had custom built-in bookshelves designed and installed by CT Yankee Crafts, and we couldn't be happier. From start to finish, the experience was an absolute pleasure. Nick was very communicative throughout the whole process, and he listened to our vision, then translated it onto paper and then into a beautiful masterpiece and a focal point in our new home. The best part is filling them up! Watching our book collection find its new home on these gorgeous, sturdy shelves has been so satisfying. It has completely transformed the room into a cozy sanctuary. Highly recommended for any custom woodwork!"

"I hired A2Z to tackle a number of projects around our house. A few bathrooms were remodeled, interior paint/spackling and exterior Ipe trim. I cannot be more pleased with the work done to our house. Weslyn was excellent at communicating when and what workers were going to be at the house. The workers a) did amazing work b) thoroughly cleaned up c) seemed to be good people. From painters to carpenters to plumbers..everyone did great work. I feel I got great value for my money and great work as well. I will hire A2Z again for other projects around the house. Ty Weslyn."

"I hired Adam and his team to frame and install my new kitchen including framing out a new pantry in a very difficult space as well as install a slider and reconfigure some walls. I am so pleased with the result. His attention to detail and work ethic are a rare find. I would recommend anyone needing any carpentry, framing, windows and doors work to contact him, you will not be disappointed."

Small jobs welcome

"Job has been completed. They arrived as scheduled, performed the work requested and cleaned up excess materials and remaining debris from the job site. As a result of the great job done on the original project, we requested that Ron's Masonry undertake a second project. They again arrived on time and completed the second project in the timeframe specified and within budget."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

On average, the cost to hire a carpenter ranges from about $75 to $100 per hour, depending on the type of carpentry, location, size of the job, and skill level of the carpenter. Get quotes from at least three carpenters in your area to determine the best price for your specific project.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

While the Arts and Crafts movement inspired many architectural elements, the primary styles from the time include Craftsman, Tudor Revivals, bungalows, and Mission homes. You'll see elements of these styles in homes, churches, museums, and schools—particularly Country Day schools from the era.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Whether or not it’s easier to cut wood when it’s wet versus dry depends largely on the type of tool you use and the wood you’re cutting. For example, a chain saw should still be able to cut through wet wood with relative ease, but it may be more difficult to maneuver due to the wood fibers sticking to the chains of the saw.

However, you might want to avoid cutting wood entirely when it’s wet if you’re pruning your tree. Sawing a wet tree that you don’t plan on removing can also encourage bacterial and fungal growth and decay.
