Dan went above and beyond when he surprised us with the addition of post skirts to add a decorative touch to the front of the real eatate office. Dan also did some plaster repair on our old horsehair plaster, and it was as smooth as glass! The best thing about the jobs was that Dan showed up on time, and did not leave to run off to other jobs. The best exterior paint finish for stucco is a flat or low-gloss finish. A high-gloss finish will show imperfections in the stucco and give it a candy-coated look that many homeowners don’t like. The best types of exterior paint to use on stucco are acrylic, masonry, and elastomeric. However, acrylic is recommended because it is both durable and breathable.

You can apply stucco to wood by wrapping it with grade D waterproof paper, installing trim accessories such as metal lath, control joints, weep screeds, casing beads, and expansion joints, and applying the stucco in three layers. You’ll need a scratch coat, brown coat, and finish coat, all applied with a trowel and screeded with a darby or straight edge. Each should cure for two days before you apply the next one.

Masonry screws are the best option to be used on stucco. They’re thicker and made to penetrate harder surfaces like concrete and cinder blocks. Fluted masonry screws work the best because they create a stronger grasp thanks to the lines on their shafts. If you’re working on exterior stucco, use galvanized screws to prevent corrosion.

You can use small bits that are up to 3/8 inch in diameter, or larger bits that are 1/2 inch or more in diameter. Make sure the bits you use are coated with carbide or diamond; this information is usually visible on the package. You can also use hole saw bits to drill into stucco.

A standard drill will work just fine if you’re drilling small holes, and only a few of them. But anything with a diameter larger than 3/8 inch is best done with a hammer drill, since it is stronger, faster, and also makes your drill bits last longer. While you don’t absolutely need a hammer drill for stucco, it is a worthy investment if you think you might drill more holes down the road.
