The smallest size a standard 2-car garage can be is 20 feet by 20 feet, so at these dimensions, you could reasonably expect to fit two cars inside. However, it’s going to be a tight fit, especially if you have larger SUVs or pickup trucks. For smaller cars, 20 x 20 should be plenty for parking and some space to maneuver around the cars. You can also search for garage door lubricant online; just make sure you get one that is made with lithium or silicone.

With the exception of small, lightweight torsion-spring garage doors, which can operate with one spring, most garage doors require two springs to work properly. Garage doors with extension springs always require two springs—if one extension spring is broken or otherwise failing, the garage door may open unevenly and could pose a hazard if the remaining spring fails.

If you have a garage heater that is 1,500 watts or more, it will need its own breaker. As a good rule of thumb, no appliance should exceed 1,500 watts per outlet for best outcomes. Consult a local garage heating service to determine the power needs for your outdoor or indoor space.

Tune-ups are a form of preventative maintenance that help extend a garage door's lifespan and prevent dangerous issues, like worn springs or misaligned sensors.
