"Groundworks did an excellent job with my house projects. Their crew (Lee, Rick and Brad) were excellent. They arrived ahead of schedule and began work immediately. "Due to a hail storm 08/01/16 First General was contracted to do the work . I received a final billing of 19,202.48. Initially they installed the wrong windows and had to reorder the right ones and then reinstall them. A host of other problems occurred. When I looked at the items I was being charged for I saw there were items I did not receive; air condition unit , chemical toilet , dumpster, and 6 other line items. It took over a year to complete the work. Then the billing was so out of line with the work that had actually been done that I refused to pay the balance that was charged. As of today 8-7-18 we have settled in small claims court for a substantial amount less than what was billed. WARNING if you do business with first general make sure you know what you are being charged for and put a time limit on the work being done. As for Angie's List I tried to get their assistance in this matter and they would not help with either mediation or consultation. I give them an F as they still have first general on their list of recommended contractors."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In many areas, advice from a structural engineer or an architect will be required by your building department before you can remove a wall, but even if it’s not necessary, it’s a good idea. Accidentally removing a load-bearing wall—even if a general contractor advises that it’s safe—can cause major structural damage, putting you and your family at risk and potentially costing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in property damage.

Signs of structural damage include foundation cracks, roof leaks, bouncy floors, crumbling concrete, and cracked or leaning chimneys. Structural damage can make itself apparent in various ways, and sometimes, there may not be obvious signs. Inspect your foundation and roof annually to stay ahead of potentially serious structural problems.

Yes, floor joists are essential structural components. They support the weight of floors and everything on them, transferring loads to the foundation and walls. Properly installed joists are necessary for maintaining strength, stability, and structural integrity.

No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.

Generally, you can tell if a home is bolted to the foundation by checking the foundation for plates. If you see that your foundational plates connect to wood or bolts protruding from them, this means that you have a bolted foundation. However, it's always wise to bring a home inspector in to confirm if your foundation is secure.
