"Peter and his crew at 5280 Sealcoating were extremely professional, they showed up on time and the job was completed before I got home so I was not inconvenienced at all. My driveway looks great and I would recommend 5280 Sealcoating to anyone."

"We highly recommend Denver Patio and Landscapes. They completely transformed our yard from dead weeds and dirt to a beautiful patio with bench seating and a built in fire pit. I used to dread looking out the window to the yard but now I canâ t wait to use the fire pit and spend time outside with my dog. We purchased this home a few months ago and knew we had to find the right team for this job and everyone at Denver Patio and Landscape were great to work with. Geovanny provided a very accurate estimate and his team was professional, gave us excellent recommendations to make the space even better and were great to work with."

"We love the driveway and enjoy the front porch extensions very much. The old driveway at 3" to 4" thick was removed totally and did not have any rebar in it at all. The new Legacy driveway has a lot of rebar, and is 5" or more thick all over. Thank you very much Legacy for the great quality job."

"Mike's Sealcoating did a good job, but not the job I wanted. I had a rough-surfaced driveway and said I wanted it smooth. Mike said he wanted to put a coat of oil on it, and I agreed - however, I did not realize that the oil would mean that a seal to make it smooth cannot be put on the driveway for two years. I am now in a 5-year process to make the driveway smooth, which is not what my goal was."

"Daniel and Jamie Gonzalez run "D&D Tree and Landscaping," a top-notch service provider, BUT I hired them for their winter SNOW REMOVAL service, and that category is NOT a HomeAdvisor category, so, I fudged on the category designation. Their company contracted with individual residents in my condo-community who can no longer shovel their driveways and whose HOA failed to provide a contractor who would do so. I researched and found "D&D" for my neighbors. I have NEVER worked with a more professional, amiable, willing-to-help business in my life. Truly, both Daniel's and Jamie's crews are courteous and very professional, completing their services in excellent fashion. They take pride in their work. I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated working with "D&D" and recommend them enthusiastically."

"I hired Canyon Dirt Works to redo my driveway with gravel. I needed a French drain in front of my garage to prevent runoff. Chris and his crew did an excellent job! Even redoing a parking area in front of my house. Work was beyond my expectations."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.

At a depth of two inches, a ton of asphalt covers around 80 to 100 square feet. However, the thicker the asphalt, the less surface area it will cover. That’s why measuring correctly is essential when estimating asphalt needs and costs to ensure you get enough material to cover your entire driveway, patio, or other asphalt surface.

Your city or county will have guidelines about the minimum and maximum width and length of private roads. The average private road is 12 feet wide, and length, of course, depends on your property. Requirements also depend on the amount of traffic and types of vehicles your road experiences. Check with local ordinances before planning a road on your property.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.
