The necessary frequency of mold cleaning in your home will depend on several factors, including the climate, the presence of moisture sources, and the type of siding. It's generally recommended to inspect your siding regularly and clean any mold growth as soon as it appears to prevent it from spreading or causing damage. If you’re not sure how often you should clean mold off siding, you can always contact a siding contractor near you to consult on what maintenance schedule will work best for your home. 

There are a few options to choose from when it comes to shingle siding, including cedar shake, vinyl, and fiber cement. You can get these shingle siding materials in different colors, shapes, and sizes, giving you plenty of room to customize. You can also combine different siding materials and patterns with shingles for a more unique curb appeal.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Signs that you need to replace your siding include siding that’s warping, bubbling, or cracking; signs of rot or mold growth; fading, peeling, or chipped siding or paint; or siding that’s separating from the exterior of your house. Failing to replace your siding when it’s damaged can lead to moisture problems or structural damage, so promptly repair or replace siding as soon as you notice any of these signs.

You may only need to repaint fiber cement siding every decade or so, but you should clean it every six to 12 months, depending on your local climate. First, wash with a garden hose or similar low-pressure device (not a high-pressure washer, which can damage the material) to remove dirt and any large debris. Then, gently wipe down the surface with a soft brush or cloth in a side-to-side motion, following the grain of the fiber cement.
