"Chaz and his team just completed applying our new roof here in Conifer. After living in the 285 corridor for the past 37 years we finally made the decision to transition to worry free metal roofing. We chose Carpenter Roofing to complete our roofing project. Their price was right and we really like keeping our dollars local. We added 26 gauge Pro Panel II metal roofing, and Velux glass skylights to replace our old plastic dome skylights. Chaz listened to our specific concerns with a area of our roof which accumulates annual ice dams. He suggested additional snow rails to slow the snow load in the valleys. They located some degraded plywood and professionally replaced it to shore up the base. Chaz and his team impressed us with his communication skills, professionalism and promptness. The team always showed up on time and were ready to put in a full days work. They meticulously cleaned up after every days work and their final product was just as we could have ever imagined. "We have used Rothgery & Sons for snow removal at our Blue River vacation home for the past 5 years which includes plowing the driveway and shoveling the walkway. Few services in the area provide shoveling services, and Dave and his crews not only provide this service, but they use heavy equipment for the plow work (not just a blade to push the snow), so we've never needed to have another service do a haul-out when the pile gets too large. They are incredibly reliable, even during big storms. I am about to renew my contract with them for the upcoming season for the sixth year in a row."

Magnesium chloride is a relatively gentle ice melt product and, if used correctly, should not cause much damage to your property. The most important thing is to be sure you apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t use too much.

A common mistake is you can let snow melt naturally in a window well. However, snow buildup in the well can damage your window frames and walls. The melting snow also poses risks of water damage as it may leak through into the basement. It’s important to shovel snow out of your window wells before too much snow is piled in there.

When temperatures drop far enough, even rock salt can’t melt the ice. The briny solution freezes before it develops, and the salt doesn’t work, which happens around 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that wind chill and other factors impact ice-melting progress. Some ice melters, like magnesium chloride, work at colder temperatures and work better for deep winter freezes.

Rubbing alcohol may also remove ice from your driveway in a pinch. It has a lower freezing point than water, which expedites the unfreezing process. Pour 70 percent isopropyl alcohol into a quart or half-gallon spray bottle and spray it on your driveway. You do not have to dilute it with water.

Some commercial services use sand when clearing ice, but that’s to add instant traction, not to melt the ice. While you can scatter kitty litter, sand, or similar substances on steps, paths, or porches to improve safety during icy conditions, they won’t help melt hardened ice. Rely on salt or other de-icing methods to fully melt away stubborn ice.
