I am a creative problem solver and take pride in my work. I will get the job done one way or another. I also have experience in most of the trades fields. I have worked as a contractor doing work like kitchen remodels installing our own custom built cabinets. I have done house editions, bathroom remodels, roofs, flooring, HVAC, you name it. I am not yet a master of any of my trades, but I am a true Jack of all Trades that will resolve your problem one way or another.

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

When deciding between stripping or sanding kitchen cabinets, the short answer is it depends on the condition of your cabinets and your end goal for them. If the cabinets are in fairly good condition and don’t have several layers of paint on them, sanding is a good option. On the other hand, older cabinets with more blemishes or marks will benefit from paint stripping, since it will give any future finishes a clean slate.

Sealing a cabinet after staining is optional but recommended for best results. Wood sealer keeps out moisture, which protects against scratches, warping, chipping, discoloration, and mildew. Sealer not only preserves the appearance of wood furniture but, like staining, enhances it by accentuating the wood’s natural color and grain.

When it comes to painting kitchen cabinets, most professionals tend to use latex paint. However, acrylic paint is also a great option, especially if you're working with wood. Along with the paint type, you'll also want to think about the finish. For kitchen cabinets, the best paint finishes are usually semi-gloss or high-gloss. These finishes are incredibly durable, which is important in high-traffic areas like kitchens. Matte finishes, on the other hand, are less durable.

Yes, sanding cabinets before you stain them helps the new stain better adhere to the surface. If you’re adding a darker stain to previously stained wood, you only have to sand them lightly enough to remove any finish and rough up the wood to improve adhesion. On the other hand, if you’re trying to stain wood that is a darker color or that has paint on it, you need to sand down to the original wood, or the color will show through the new stain.

Clean regularly, avoid harsh chemicals, and address scratches or dents promptly to preserve their appearance.
