"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

"Excellent customer service and work for adding electric to our fireplace to mount a TV. Craig was very responsive and had the job done in less than 48 hours. He even added a conduit (which I never would have thought of) in case we want to add more cables, audio, etc in the future. Pricing was very reasonable and accurate and he sent pictures of the job when it was done since we are not onsite (another above and beyond thought I didn't ask for). He will absolutely be my go-to electrician in the future."

"Red Rocks took the time to visit my house and give me details on the installation and options. I am quite out of the way for Red Rocks, but the project was completed on schedule and for one of the best prices around."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The best place to put an electrical outlet depends on your needs. A good rule of thumb is to install outlets every 6 feet in large rooms. Hallways over 10 feet long need one electrical outlet minimum.

If you find yourself needing extra plug-ins for all of your gadgets, you may want to increase the number of electrical outlets in your room. When adding outlets, keep in mind that older homes could have outdated electrical panels. In these cases, you may need a pro to upgrade you from 100-amp to 200-amp service before increasing the power load.

A 3-prong, 15-amp, 120-volt outlet is standard in the U.S. These have two vertical slots and a U-shaped grounding hole, which suits most home electronics, from televisions to microwaves. Three-pronged outlets are safer than 2-pronged ones, as the third wire, known as the grounding wire, helps prevent shocks and electrical fires.

A GFCI outlet is easy to identify. It features two buttons on the face that read “TEST” and “RESET.” Sometimes, the “RESET” button is red. These are positioned in the center of the two three-prong plug-in slots you see on a regular outlet. Some also feature a green light to indicate when the outlet is working, changing to red when there is a problem.

You may not always need to hire a local electrician to install a doorbell camera. Wireless doorbell cameras, for instance, are simple enough for the average homeowner to install. They easily attach to your threshold and run on batteries, so no wiring is necessary.

However, wired doorbells with cameras likely require electrical work that should only be attempted by licensed electricians. You’ll need to call a pro if you’re working with a wired doorbell camera.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.
