"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

"Excellent customer service and work for adding electric to our fireplace to mount a TV. Craig was very responsive and had the job done in less than 48 hours. He even added a conduit (which I never would have thought of) in case we want to add more cables, audio, etc in the future. Pricing was very reasonable and accurate and he sent pictures of the job when it was done since we are not onsite (another above and beyond thought I didn't ask for). He will absolutely be my go-to electrician in the future."

"Red Rocks took the time to visit my house and give me details on the installation and options. I am quite out of the way for Red Rocks, but the project was completed on schedule and for one of the best prices around."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, a whole-house surge protector needs a designated breaker in your electrical panel. You will need to choose a double pole breaker that has two wire terminals so that your surge protector can connect to the breaker. This breaker needs two breaker slots inside of your panel. If you do not have room, then you will either need to adjust some of the existing breakers in the panel box or hire an electrician to install a subpanel.

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, a standard safety addition to home power outlets. In rooms where moisture is more likely, like the bathroom and kitchen, GFCI outlets stop the current when certain kinds of shorts are detected, preventing shocks. Both GFCI and the similar AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are polarized and have clear indicators on the receptacle where hot wiring should go.

At a minimum, you need an electrician to inspect the house wiring after a fire. The electrician will need to replace damaged or melted wires. If the electrical wiring is old, about 25 years or more, you should rewire the house after a fire. Old wiring can increase the risk of another fire, so replacing the wires is the safest option.

The National Fire Protection Association reports that almost half of reported electrical fires are caused by electrical distribution and lighting equipment. The main culprit behind these fires is often frayed, worn, or faulty wiring, particularly in closed-off and concealed areas like attics, where fires can start and burn undetected for long periods.

To determine if an electrical outlet is blown, look for visible signs of damage such as a burning or smoky smell, burn marks, or a melted or discolored plastic cover. If you notice a burning smell, contact an electrician immediately. Other signs include a plug that keeps falling out or the outlet not working when you test it with different devices. For further troubleshooting, you can use a voltage tester or multimeter to check for power; a reading of zero indicates a problem. Also, check your circuit breaker or fuse box to see if the circuit was tripped and reset it if necessary. If these steps don't resolve the issue, the outlet may need to be replaced.
