"Marco is much better than most licensed general contractors.  He really cares about doing the job right.  He provided a flat rate for labor and provided materials at cost.  His estimates as to both time and money were accurate.  He arrived on time each and every day and the work progressed without dealy or interruption.  He discussed the pros and cons of various materials and construction techniques.  Marco is both clever and resourceful - he was able to pull the listing structure into position with little problem.  He built temporary walls to hold the structure in place while he worked and reinforced the structurewith better Sampson strong ties and bigger posts and beams.  Clean up and haul away of debris was thorough.  All and all a good experience working on a steep hillside in Mt. Washington.

"Easy communication and flexible. As opposed to other contractors I actually had help figuring out issues that came up in the middle of the project, and found ways to minimize expenses. Very appreciative. The project was a big one too, 2 office and 2 exec rooms, so even more so happy with working with good honest people."

Pole Barn Builders questions, answered by experts

Whether you should choose a flat roof or a sloped roof depends on your particular situation. Flat roofs tend to be less expensive to install. However, sloped roofs have longer lifespans and stand up better to heavy snow and other inclement weather.

Keep in mind that even a flat roof needs to have a slight slope, usually around 1/2 inch for every foot. If it is completely flat, water will pool and cause damage, either from weight or leakage or rot.

Tiny houses, often called tiny homes, need between 100 to 400 square feet, with the most common size being between 200 and 300 square feet. Tiny houses more than 400 square feet venture into apartment-size dwellings and may be considered more of a traditional house than a tiny home. The number of occupants, desired lifestyle, and furniture will all be major factors that determine the desired tiny house size.

Rustic and modern farmhouse styles are currently the most popular. These include rustic and antique furniture, muted colors, clean lines, eclectic decor, and natural materials. Some other popular farmhouse styles include the following:

  • Coastal farmhouse: Creates a lighter, airier feel with soft colors and blue palettes, along with gold

  • Colonial farmhouse: Focuses on real antique furniture and decor

  • French farmhouse: Leans on French country architecture and design by including marble and lighter-colored metals, like zinc

  • Industrial farmhouse: Includes thick, chunky furniture and dark metals

  • Scandinavian farmhouse: Usually includes lighter wood colors and more refined furniture

Any type of construction that damages a tree’s roots via soil compaction can be dangerous, and is one of the primary causes of mature tree death in residential areas. Simply putting lots of weight on the ground around the tree, like construction supplies, trailers, and equipment, can kill roots near the surface. Of course, installing new foundations, patios, or utility lines can cut through nearby tree roots. Accidentally striking a tree with equipment or supplies is rarely a problem, but can cause damage of its own, too.

Whether a prefab home is worth it or not will depend on your personal needs and preferences. Overall, prefab homes tend to cost less than traditional homes, although they also tend to have lower resale values. Another thing to consider is that prefab homes usually last 50 to 60 years or longer, while traditional homes last 50 to 100 years or more.
