"We recently had Mega Power Electric Inc install a solar system and panels. The President and provided excellent communication all the way through the process. He even met with us after installation to explain the almost incomprehensible PG&E bill. Although not the least expensive bid, his was competitive and I felt he was as interested in educating me about solar and the various types of panels and inverter systems as he was in selling a system. He demonstrated how the array of panels would meet our energy needs and as opposed to some of the other companies, wasn't selling us more than we needed. We are very satisfied with our solar system and I highly recommended Mega Power Electric Inc."

",After dealing with another solar company, we fired them and went with Golden West Energy.  Their engineer Hal came out and assessed our needs, we gave them our KWH usage for the year and they went back and promptly emailed us with a drawing of how the solar panels would be placed on our roof, how the electrical would hook up to our panel box, and the cost. It was quick, honest and very detailed.. WE HAD NO SALES PITCH WHICH WE GOT FROM EVERY OTHER SOLAR COMPANY WE INTERVIEWED. I was concerned about the tile roof. Scott, the owner, determined that due to the possible breakage and the fact that the underlayment of the existing room was 30 years old the tile would be removed, new tar paper and composite shingles would be laid down. Once that was done, the brackets for the panels were installed then the panels and then the tile were put back around the panels,so there is complete continuity of tile work with a new roof underneath. The panels look totally integrated into the tile.
Once that was done, they hooked up the electric to our panel box which required some rearrranging. Again, Scott and his crew did a terrific job of running lines in flexible conduit and then painted it to match the tile and the walls of our home. It is barely noticeable.
Once completed Golden West arranged for the city inspector to review the work, it passed with flying colors.
We had to wait for SDGE to reprogram our system, which took a couple of days but once done, they told us to flip the switch which we did and  our meter is running backward, plus I go into the SDGE web site and see the graph showing our savings.
I have recommended Golden West to three neighbors in our complex who are interested in installing solar energy.
One of the supervisors in our complex used Golden West eight years ago for solar energy and he was very pleased with his results.
I liked the fact that Golden West Energy has been around since 1985. That is a great track record,
Golden West is the only company I would use for my solar energy needs.

"The guys an Independent Energy Solutions helped me finish the solar installation on my house, ensuring 100% code compliance, and finalizing the connections to the grid.  They were extremely responsive and very quick.   They have since helped a number of the homeowners in our neighborhood fix and/or upgrade systems originally installed by Shea Homes (original home builder) in 2002 and 2003.

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

Leaving vents open but closing doors in unused rooms will probably not save money on your energy bill. Closed doors prevent the natural flow of air throughout the home, which could reduce the efficiency of the overall HVAC system. They could also restrict airflow into and through the return vents, making the HVAC system less efficient.

Not all homes are suited for solar panel systems. Older roofs or those in poor condition may need repairs or replacement before solar panels can be installed. Some other factors to consider are the amount of sunlight your roof receives, the roof’s orientation and pitch, and any shading from nearby trees or buildings.

To find a reputable home energy auditor, start by researching local companies that offer the service and check their reviews, methods, and certifications. The most reputable professionals are often Home Energy Professional (HEP)-certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). You can also consult the Department of Energy’s certified list of energy auditors or use a state licensing tool to review local guidelines and ensure you are hiring a certified professional for your area.

Hawaii is currently rated as the most expensive state for utilities. How much are utilities for a house in Hawaii? With electricity costs in Hawaii totaling nearly 42 cents per kilowatt-hour, residents are paying more to run their households than any other residents. Electricity costs in Hawaii are so high, mostly due to the fact that most of the electricity available to residents is produced using oil that must be shipped in from other places.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.
