"They started each day at 8:00 AM and worked until 5:00 or later. They were very polite and professional. The lead person George would explain what they would be doing each day and then perform the tasks. The deck looks like it is brand new and the redwood has the original color and grain. Note: the bill included 4 hours of setting the deck screws so they could sand. Otherwise they performed to the bid."

"We had a roof leak in our bedroom at our home in San Jose and needed it fixed fast. I reached out to Imperia Roofing & Exteriors and Sean responded the same day. He came out, found the issue, and scheduled the repair right away. The repair was completed within 24 hours and everything went smoothly. The whole process was quick and easy, and Sean was great to work with. Glad we called Imperia Roofing & Exteriors."

"Roberto did a wonderful job replacing the second floor deck of my house and integrating a new deck on the first floor, I highly recommend him. He took great care designing and building the deck and I couldn't be happier with the finished product (see the before and after attached photos). The first floor deck involved a substantial amount of additional work including replacing our standard door with a sliding glass door, moving a bathroom window, installing a new door for basement access, building concrete stairs, and building brick and concrete walkway. It was a big project and I am happy and satisfied with both the finished product and the price."

"They were great! Very responsive and honest! They fixed up and epoxied the cracks in the stem wall on the raised foundation of my house. The project seemed daunting but these guys made the process so easy. And looks great! One more thing to check off the house projects list! â ï¸"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

You can nail or screw composite decking, but 3-inch decking screws are the better fastener choice. Unlike nails, decking screws won’t back out of the composite material over time. There’s also little danger of splitting composite material when driving screws, so you don’t need to pre-drill holes unless otherwise recommended by your decking manufacturer.

While experienced DIYers may take on the challenge, hiring a licensed professional is often the best route, especially for larger or elevated structures. A local deck contractor is typically the best pro for the job, as they have specialized experience and are knowledgeable about local building codes, ensuring your deck is built safely and designed to last. Other professionals who can build a deck include general contractors and carpenters, who may be more readily available in some regions.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.
