Small jobs welcome

"I contacted Angi's for the first time to request quotes to refinish our living room and stairway hardwood flooring. I received three responses. Two of the contractors seemed to have little to no interest in taking the job. I met with Teo, the owner of Machucho Hardwood Flooring. He was extremely professional and we negotiated to start the job the following day. Teo and his crew took great care to tape off the adjoining rooms, had great filters on the equipment and finished the job with amazing results. I am so very pleased with the finished job and highly recommend them. Our floors look beautiful."

"These guys had a lot of hidden costs to re floor my bathroom. They could not put the toilet back or the bathroom door because the new floor was higher than the old floor. I had to fix these on my own. They were much cheaper than all other bids. I could only get one other bid as the job was small."

Hardwood Flooring FAQs, answered by experts

Common problems with laminate flooring include surface-level scratches, dents, warping, and separating seams. Scratches can be caused by dragging heavy items like furniture or from not using a mat under rolling office chairs. Dents can occur from regular wear and tear or from dropping heavy objects on the floor. Most of these issues can be prevented with regular cleaning and moisture control, and many are fairly easy to fix for a beginner DIYer.

Berber is the most expensive type of carpet, followed by textured carpet. Berber costs $3 to $20 per square foot, and textured carpet ranges from $1 to $12 per square foot. Berber features fibers arranged in short, thick loops, making it extraordinarily durable. The most expensive carpet material is wool, followed by acrylic, Triexta, and cotton. Wool costs $4 to $20 per square foot and is a beautiful, luxurious, and durable material. Acrylic, Triexta, and cotton range from $2 to $8 per square foot.

Carpet stretching can be a worthwhile investment to increase the lifespan of your carpet and eliminate unsightly wrinkles, ridges, and ripples. For an older carpet that is in relatively good condition aside from some wrinkling or bubbling, restretching can make it look like new and extend its life by at least a couple of years. You should consider restretching when you notice looseness or other related issues.

However, it's important to note that stretching will not fix issues like stains, wear in the pile, or discoloration. Consider replacing the carpet instead if the repair cost is more than 50% of the price of a new one. Additionally, if your carpet is past its expected lifespan of five to 15 years, or if it has been stretched multiple times already, replacement is likely a better option.

Vinyl floors last between 10 and 25 years on average when you care for them and protect them against water damage, though higher-quality vinyl can last longer.

If your vinyl flooring has heavy wear and tear or if it's peeling, it's a good time to do a reinstallation. Other signs your flooring is nearing the end of its lifespan include bubbling, heat-damaged planks or tiles, and discoloration.

As with anything you buy, be wary of prices that seem too good to be true. Some low-cost flooring products can contain chemicals that release harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the form of fumes that can be inhaled or dust that can cause skin conditions.

Even good-quality products can be dangerous for DIY-ers who don’t take proper precautions. Always carefully read manufacturer instructions and wear the recommended protective gear when working with paints and other chemicals. You can also hire a local garage flooring pro with the experience and equipment needed to perform the installation safely with no lingering fumes or debris.
