I have a very old (almost 100 year old) house that I hired them to refinish the hardwood floors. What made this a 2 star and not a 5 star is the serious lack of communication. Paul was out many times (around 5 or so) to see what myself and my family were doing to get the house ready. Since it?s old there were 2 closets and the entry that had a tar paper on them. I had always let Paul know this and that was not an issue until the day that his son and grandson showed up to do the work. Then his son, Kevin tried backing out of it. I had to call Paul and talk to him about the issue. The work got done in the end but I have no idea why Paul didn?t take pictures or let Kevin know of the problem areas to show him before the contract was signed. Also wasn?t made aware I might have to pay more until he came for the last check. Nothing on the contract stated there could be add on for work, but he was asking for more because of the closets and entry. I paid what was agreed to by contract only.

This was not an easy project. We bought a 113 year old house in Minneapolis while still living in Denver, so we did all our communication by phone and email. Paul was so patient and knowledgeable! I knew I'd found someone special when he talked me into the less expensive 'screen and coat' option. Turns out we needed the full sand-stain-seal treatment, which opened the door to a change in color. Despite the delays it caused, Paul indulged my request for a side-by-side test of five stain options and even waited for my husband to fly out to see them in person. In the end, we chose the stain we would have without the test but the extra time and care Paul and his son took ensured we did so confidently. The pictures doesn't do the floors justice. They are absolutely beautiful and i appreciate them (and Northstar's three generations of experience) more every day. I wouldn't hesitate to call on Paul and his family again. They have the kind of craftsmanship and integrity that feels rare and hard to find these days. Paul was the first contractor we worked with in Minnesota and he set a high bar for service and quality.

Northstar Hardwood Floors installed new flooring and also refinished existing hardwoods. They were FAST! and the floors look amazing. Great local small business that I highly recommend

They made my Dads old house look new again! Ripped out the old carpet & disposed, and sanded & shined the beautiful hardwood underneath. What a difference it has made!

Disappointed in the metal thresholds. Would have preferred wood.

I appreciated the workers (son and grandson of owner) who showed up to sand, stain and polyurethene my 116 year old wood floors. However, the owner of the company talked me into cheap looking metallic thresholds. I wish I had insisted on wood. I was willing to pay more.

Paul is very responsive and nice to work with as are Kevin and Luke. Have done 3 projects with them and a couple difficult areas were handled well. One concern was dealt with quickly. Will definitely hire them again.

Old varnished flooring was in bad shape. Kevin and Luke worked hard. Floors turned out better then I imagined.

Very happy with the final results and would definitely recommend these guys. I only wished for better communication about timing and their expectations from us in advance. That would have been helpful and saved some frustration. Still high overall satisfaction, though.

This firm is trustworthy and will tell you if they can or cannot do a job and the reasons why. Paul is responsive to requests for estimates, provides options with estimates, and is friendly and professional.

I hired Northstar to refinish hardwood floors in my vintage (1926) condo. The floors now look brand new. Northstar is extremely affordable and the staff communicated with me every step of the way -- including with a follow up call post refinishing, with recommendations on how to clean and care for my floors going forward. Highly recommend!

They did a wonderful job for us - we have an older home and they did a very good job taking care of our floors. Replacing boards and making sure things blended in well with existing boards.
